satureja hortensis COMMON NAMES Bean Herb Savory DESCRIPTION An annual plant that grows wild in the Mediterranean area and widely cultivated elsewhere as a kitchen herb. Its branching root produces a bushy, hairy stem which grows from one to one and one half feet high, often taking on a purple hue as it matures. The opposite, small oblong-linear leaves are sessile or nearly so and may have hairy margins. The pink or white, two-lipped flowers grow whorl-like cymes from July to October. The entire plant is aromatic. |
