Wofford faculty in the processionIn 1998 I graduated from Mullins High School and entered Wofford College—a special place where I could call students, faculty and staff as friends. In May 2002, I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in government and economics.  Wofford is located in Spartanburg, South Carolina, approximately 225 miles from Mullins.

Open in 1854, Wofford College is an independent liberal arts college affiliated with the United Methodist Church. It has one of the nation’s 266 Phi Beta Kappa chapters and is ranked in the top third of 218 “national liberal arts colleges” by US News & World Report. Wofford also is noted for its superb information technology network and Franklin W. Olin Building; its opportunities for studies abroad (3rd nationally in one study); its graduation rate for student athletes (10th in NCAA Division I); and its student volunteer service programs. The new $14.5 million Roger Milliken Science Center opened in 2001. With an enrollment of 1,100 students, Wofford is the smallest college fielding an NCAA Division I-AA football team and is the summer training camp home of the NFL Carolina Panthers.

At Wofford, I was involved in many activities including Campus Union (student government), Judicial Court, Sigma Alpha Epsilon social fraternity, Inter-Fraternity Council, Rotaract Club, Alpha Phi Omega national service fraternity, Wesley Fellowship and Wofford Singers.  I was also fortunate to serve on many committees involving student affairs, Greek life, and student government.  For three years, I served as the co-chair of the Public Policy Committee in the Office of Communications, responsible for coordinating activities to get students involved in government and politics as part of the college's civic education initiative.

During the second semester of my junior (third) year at Wofford, I decided to study abroad at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.  I took classes in international relations and Scottish history at St. Andrews, Scotland's oldest university--founded in 1411.  St. Andrews is home to the famous Old Course for golf fans and has been made famous by Prince William, now a student of the University.
