Delight suddenly filled Sheila’s face and she nodded in definite approval. “Oh, good one, Diana!”
The dark-skinned beauty grinned back. Striding quickly over to Uni, she lifted the little unicorn into her strong arms, giving the equine an unexpected, but happily received hug. “This one’s for you, Uni.”
Uni bleated back in joy. Two dedications right in a row was fine by her. Especially as Bobby nodded enthusiastically and grinned widely.
Without vocalization, the six humans seemed to agree to sing different parts of their song, starting with Presto and Eric, whose voices actually blended acceptably well. They each gave Uni a pat as they sang.
The unicorn felt grateful for the reassuring words. After all, she sometimes felt like the biggest burden… and she had long suspected that Eric only tolerated her for Bobby’s sake. As to that, she felt he only tolerated Bobby for Sheila’s sake… and Sheila for… Head spinning at the concept, Uni pushed it out of her thoughts to concentrate on Hank and Diana’s lyrics.
“Myeah!”
The children laughed at Uni’s addition to the song. Sheila and Bobby, as well as Eric and Presto, joined Hank and Diana in the refrain. No one was paying attention to the drunken and overly enthusiastic Dwarves who had gotten up to start a crude form of what they might later claim to be clog dancing… which unfortunately didn’t quite go with the beat.
Four voices silenced, leaving Sheila and Bobby singing in actual harmony. It was apparent that both had sung together before, probably had even been trained together in some setting or another.
Unexpectedly, the Dwarves jumped in to join the six children and Uni in one more rendition of the refrain. The Dwarves made up their own lyrics while Uni stumbled along in her sad attempts at human speech. All in all, however, the Young Ones were able to drown them out without loosing too much of the tune in the bargain.
A cheer went up from other patrons who’d stopped for a drink and a bit of rest from the weary road. The inn keeper seemed to appreciate this new, unusual form of entertainment to the normal brawls and gambling that he seemed to host nightly. Having a group of kids on the premises wasn’t too bad… if they only stayed a little while.
The music faded and everyone fell silent, though one Dwarf could still be heard droning out...
With a laugh, Diana gave Uni one more hug and handed her off to the next person… which happened to be Eric. He rolled his eyes and gave an annoyed glare to his companion’s back, but didn’t put the foal down. Rather, he carried her to the jukebox and asked, in a slightly vindictive voice… as if to get even with Diana… for the unicorn to select the next song. He glanced over his shoulder, “And we’ll see if the Acrobat knows it this time.” He sounded quite certain she wouldn’t.
