Ballad of The Bad-Dog-Thieving -Date Unknown
In days of old when virgin lands,
Ne’er by men were marred,
There was raised by a great King,
A glorious kitchen of the Geots,
It’s arches tall, it’s torches bright,
They would feast their fill there each night,
Lament the men, so short of sight,
And so soon to be stricken by such plight.
One night there crept from shad’wy lair,
A monster malicious to the heart,
It snuck as no beast of honor does,
Wickedness moving through the night,
It’s hell’s-breath was death to smell,
Death lurked with it in darkened dell,
Lament the lack of warriors fell,
The larder emptied, their death-knell.
Eaten in the night, much food was lost,
The hall abandoned now in hunger,
The wild beast prowled around each night,
The men began to whisper to each other,
The King must call his bravest kinsman here,
His name forged with sword and spear,
Renown his own, with price so dear,
Oh, we wish Luke would appear!
By the time their wish was gained,
The beast, Bad-Dog, had terrified,
Entire hall and country-side,
For just o’er a score of years,
But the champion, now arriving,
Hid to wait for monster shrithing,
But Luke took time contriving,
A plan to stop the Creature Conniving.
When all was dark and hall asleep,
Enter the Inky Iniquity,
Among the store-rooms slowly smiling,
To select the tenderest of the meat,
Reaching the room with warrior waiting,
Courageous crouching, monster baiting,
Wicked tongue captured with grip so grating
Tonight there will be no satiating!
Bad-Dog and Hero connected eyes,
They knew this night would end with defeat,
A growl rumbled in both their throats,
Their muscles clenched, two giants meet,
The battle begun, voices pealing,
Eyes aflame, blows dealing,
Plaster cascades from the ceiling,
Bad-Dog stumbles, falling, bleeding.
Beaten the beast bounds to safety,
Escaping but leaving it’s tongue behind,
Forever to live on applesauce,
Now to mush it’s meals it must grind,
It’s prospects of good food receding,
Lying, starving, broken, bleeding,
The hero victorious then proceeding,
To declare, in victory, great feasting!
