  1. Mesa College Update

Letter will be sent to administrators highlighting the following concerns and requesting a meeting with Concilio members:

    1. Chicano college student retention
    2. Chicano presence and visibility on campus
    3. Campus climate
    4. Chicano studies need for temporary contiguous space to for students and faculty
    5. Department development through hiring new faculty.

In addition, a planning meeting will be set with Chicano Studies Chair prior to meeting with Mesa College administration.

 

B) Values and Missions

A discussion ensued related to the posting and promotion of both the San Diego County Latino Coalition on Education and the San Diego Concilio for High Education mission statements and functions. An organizational chart and description was presented for information to members present. A meeting will be established as soon as possible with our webmaster to discuss the format and presentation of these documents and summary notes from monthly meetings.

Missions of the:

 

C) Concilio will send letter to the CSU Trustees with attachments. Concerns: Issues of enroll management, impaction, and access for CSU eligible students. Highlight campus-based barriers for Latino in the SDSU service area. Eligibility standards not published. Letter will propose two actions and request meeting. First, to establish local entitlement through an Executive Order that will meet local enrollment demands and second, to circumvent any misuse or resources that would undercut diverse student access.

      1. Concilio will address hate crimes against people of color and women by the November 2001 issue of Koloa, a student run UCSD (tax supported) newspaper. Problem to be presented to San Diego County District Attorney by Concilio and nationally on the Internet as a hate crime . SDSU faculty/staff will scan newspaper and draft a letter to the UC Board of Regents and all other relevant bodies.
      2. Summary notes will be prepared for each meeting. SDSU faculty will review summary notes and approve them for listserv distribution. Webmaster will post on WWW.
