GENERAL INFORMATION:
This guide to the Medical Library provides information about services for the staff, interns, patients,
and families of patients.

COLLECTION:
The library collection contains 1,500 books and over 80 journal subscriptions totaling over 3,538 volumes,
plus 1,300 audiovisual items and 8 computer databases. Its scope includes basic and biomedical sciences,
psychiatry, psychology, psychiatric nursing, clinical medicine and consumer health care. The online
catalog can be searched by author, title, subject, or keyword, and gives the location of materials.
Books are shelved by Library of Congress classification scheme.
The Reference Collection contains directories, dictionaries, handbooks. Basic psychiatric, internal medicine,
nursing, psychology, socail work and medical texts. Reference materials cannot be checked out.
Journals are shelved alphabetically by title and divided by date of publication: Journals may not be checked out.
Electronic Resources can be accessed through links on our website or through public access terminals in the library.
The library subscribes to a variety of bibliographic and full-text databases including MEDLINE, PsycINFO,
STAT! REF, CINAHL, Psychology and Behavioral Sciences, and EBSCOhost Electronic Journals.
Library staff offers assistance in learning to use these databases.
The Audiovisual (AV) Collection contains videos, audiocassettes, CDs, and computer programs.
AVs may be checked out for two weeks. AV equipment is available in the library.
Special Collection:
The John Galt Library consisting of 130 books and artifacts dating back to the early 1800’s. The historical collection
may be consulted by appointment only. Call 253-5457.
REFERENCE SERVICES:
The librarian can search a wide variety of databases and resources. Discussion with the librarian will
enhance the value of your search results.
To request a search:
There are 10 public access PCs. These PCs are available for all library users to search the library’s
online catalog (OPAC), EBSCOhost Online Journals, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Psychology and Behavioral Sciences,
STAT!Ref and the Internet.
COMPUTER SERVICES:
Computer Training Lab:
The lab is open during the library’s operating hours. When the library is closed, arrangements can be
made for accessing the computer lab. Reservations are required for ESH training programs. Call x5457 to register.

CIRCULATION SERVICES:
Borrowing Materials:
To borrow materials, clients must be employees of Eastern State Hospital, Community Services Boards or DMHMRS.
Once you have selected your items, sign the book cards with your name and building number and place cards
in the box provided.
Reference materials must be requested and checked out at librarian’s desk. Reference materials can be checked out
overnight before the library closes. They must be returned within one hour after the library opens the next day.
Loan Periods:
Renewals:
Materials may be renewed at the library or by phone unless a hold request has been filed for an item.
A maximum of three renewals is allowed.
Hold Request:
You may request that circulating material be held for you when they are returned.
Items needed urgently may be recalled and must be returned immediately. You may request that books or journals
be pulled and placed on a hold shelf for you. Materials will be held for seven days. If not picked up within
that time, they will be returned to the collection.
Returning Library Materials:
All library borrowers are responsible for the safe and prompt return of items
checked out in their names. To ensure that you are properly credited for returning your library materials,
return to the library they materials were checked out from.
Do not leave materials on the top of checkout table. If the library is closed, return to SD&T staff.
Overdue or Lost Library Materials:
Having overdue library materials will result in the loss of borrowing
privileges. Borrowers who lose or fail to return library materials are liable for replacement cost.
Fines:
There are no fines charged for the return of late materials.
PHOTOCOPYING
Self-service copier is located in the Medical Library. There is no charge for this service.
Copies will be made of articles requested from Journals at a Glance sent to clients through ESH mail system.
INTERLIBRARY LOAN SERVICES:
If the library does not own the journal, book, or AV that you need, the interlibrary loan service (ILL)
will attempt to borrow the item or obtain a photocopy of the article from another library.
To request an item through interlibrary loan:
If an article is needed for emergency patient care, you can request rush service.
RECOMMENDATION FOR PURCHASE:
Recommendations for purchase of materials to be added to the library’s collection should be submitted
on card forms available in the library. Fill our form as completely as possible; you may attach reviews,
publisher’s flyers, etc. All requests will be considered for purchase.
GIFTS:
Gifts of books, journals, and AVs are accepted.
