News for 2000
This year is as stressful as last year was.

Mike started the year unemployed after the Holiday rush of temp jobs dwindled to nothingness......then he started work at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal as a Randstad Temp for the same company that hired him in 1990 and then laid him off when he completed the work in 3 months. But that was then, this is now.  And temp jobs do end eventually.

On January 24th, Sandy's mom was driving a friend's car in the mountains between Gunnison and Lake City when she hit a patch of black ice and went off the road backwards. The back of the seat broke as she and her friend bounced off of boulders going down.   She hit her head on the seatbelt holder and It knocked her unconcious. It also broke her neck (It shattered the left side of the C1), back (T5 and T6), and 3 ribs on her left side and seperated the C5 and C6 in her neck..   It also caused a bad gash on the back leftside of her head and a slight brain hemorrhage in the front left side. She was hospitalized for 2 weeks but was up and walking with help 5 days after the accident.  That was our miracle for the year. She is mostly back to normal except for stiffness in her neck and occasional pain in her back and neck.

In March, Sandy turned 40 and spent half the day at her mom's in Del Norte before driving home in a snowstorm to spend the rest of the day with the rest of her family.  They had filled the livingroom with black and "over the hill" balloons. They even topped a pound cake with 40 black candles. (yes, the fire department was standing by!)

In June & July Duane attended Summer School for 2 classes so he wouldn't have to be in the 7th grade but it wasn't enough credits after attending the Vantage Point Campus - CAI program so he's still listed as a 7th grader.  He got expelled again in September from Crossroads Alternative Middle School. A kid threatened to kill him and he said some things back and the kid turned him in. Nothing was done to the other child but Duane is facing court for Menacing!  He is only expelled until April 1st. Is that a cruel joke or what? If they are so scared of him, why not for the whole school year again?????  The principal told the cops one thing and the school district something else so we are fighting this in court.

Lanine turned 18 this year and graduated from Sundown High School on June 2, 2000. She bridged up from Senior Girl Scouts to Adult Girl Scouts. We gave her a lifetime membership to Girl Scouts as a graduation present. She helped out at Day Camp again but with one major change as a Unit Leader! Way to go! She was in charge of the 4th graders and called their unit the Starkley Spies (spoonerism for Sparkley Spies).

Sandy Co-Directed the Girl Scout Mile Hi Council Day Camp at Adams County Fairgrounds. This year she got the job as Business Manager.  She is also a Council Trainer for Program Aides (teenage Girl Scouts) and a Program Aide Task Force Member. There will be no camp in 2001 because Council made an executive decision based on "demographics" to close it. This was heartbreaking to Sandy because the 1,226 girls in the Adams County Day Camp area will suffer. We had a 20 girl increase in attendance (it would have been at least 30 except 10 girls (that we know of) didn't get their registrations in on time and had to be turned away. We were even turning away adult and teen helpers! Sandy is still listed as working for Randstad (formerly Office Specialists) Temps and her 2.5 year long term temporary job at PAMCO Stewart & Stevenson ended in late July.

There was no Castle Of Fear Haunted House due to the owner getting married so we volunteered at Chronos II: Tomb of Terror.  It was much smaller with only 5 rooms so was very different and not nearly as busy.  We had fun and Duane got community service hours for it so that's all that matters.

Angela got married again this summer and is due with her 4th child on Thanksgiving.
