Setting Math Goals using MAP data and classroom grades:

At mid-term, each student is given a goal setting sheet.

The class discusses what makes a good goal and a brainstormed list is recorded on the board. This is followed by a discussion of good strategies students can use to reach goals and those are also listed, in a different color.

Students then fill in the Math Goal Sheet with the midterm grade and the spring and fall MAP scores (supplied by the teacher).

After the students have their scores, we have found a discussion of the scores is necessary. Many students dropped a few points over the summer. This is a good opportunity to discuss why someone may have dropped or gained, what sometimes happens over the summer, and whether or not students took the test seriously. We found that this opportunity to record and reflect on their own scores was valuable to the students in setting their goals.

Students then were asked to set a reasonable math goal and to list three good strategies to use to reach that goal.

The sheets are signed and collected by the teacher.

These sheets are returned to students at report card and midterm time each quarter and goals are reevaluated and reflections written and signed each time.

Sample strategies:     Ask questions.    Come to class prepared.

Set aside time to study.      Come for after school help. Take good notes.        Organize my materials.    Write my assignments in my notebook.
