ZoneRings From Outer Space: ScreenSaver and Interactive Eye Candy

A few years back, a screen saver became available called ZoneRings from Outer Space. It was truly wonderful, and in my opinion, quite the best out there for interactive eye candy. When John Biddiscombe first created ZoneRings, he made a gift of his efforts, and made the screensaver available on the net as FREEWARE for several years. Lately, and sadly, most of the ZoneRings download sites are inoperative, with the exception of a few kind netizens who have included the download on their personal websites. Graphics Depot also has a ZoneRings download available, still freeware, but they are charging a small fee for their add-on, "ZoneRings Supercharger." Personally, I feel this is against John B's ideals and his intent to keep ZoneRings free, but that's their karma and none of my business. This is what John stated in the ZoneRings Help book, under Legal Rubbish:

"Zonerings are free to a good home.
Distribute anywhere (and everywhere if you please).
You may not sell them or in any other way make financial gain without my say so. "

So, with John Biddiscombe's words and kind intentions in mind, I am happy to make this awesome screen saver available here as well. I am also making available a small download of add-on files, ZRings_Plus. These files include all of John's original designs, an extra 326 design settings that I have made, and extra colour palettes. THESE WILL ALSO BE KEPT AS FREEWARE, in keeping with John B's original intentions. I will be updating the Plus files as I write new designs, so check back often. *grin* ZRings_Plus must be manually installed; full instuctions are in the "ZRPlus_Instructions.txt" file included in the download. You MUST have the original Zonerings program installed in order to run my Plus files, but it's worth it if you like screen saver-type eye candy. Here are some screen shots from the original ZoneRings screen saver. The program is full of movement, changing colours and morphing designs, and although the still-shots hardly do the art justice, these will at least give you a small idea of what ZoneRings is all about:

You'll need a zip program to open these downloads, so if you dont have one, you can grab an evaluation version of WinZip for free here:

If you are running Netscape, you may get a message that says:

"You have started to download a file of type application/zip. Click "More Info" to learn how to extend Navigator's capabilities"

If you have your zip program already, just click the "Save file.." button, and select your Desktop as the place to save the download, for easy access.... and for those of you who are new to the net, this bears repeating over and over and...(well, you get the idea *grin*) NEVER open ANY download, or executable file from ANYWHERE before you run your virus scan on it, no matter how much you trust the site!!! If you don't have a good virus scan program, go to McAfee.com to purchase theirs. A link is provided below, and will open in a new browser window. When you get to McAfee, look under "Products and Services" and click on "Virus Scan." Believe me, it's worth it, it's inexpensive, and McAfee is recommended by many 'puter techies.

In the meantime, for a free virus scan, you can go to Antivirus.com and use their online scan; a link to that is also provided here, also opening in a new browser window. Just click on "Free Virus Scan" in their site guide, then follow instructions from there; there's a small download to enable use through Netscape. It's well worth the effort, as this free scan can detect trojans, and malicious nasties that are circulating in some of the current executable joke files, where other scans may fail at detecting these mean little tidbits.

One totally free antivirus software download, recommended by 'puter techies, is AVG by Grisoft..

Of course you've heard of "spyware" all over the net...and what can you do about it? Well, here are 2 very good and highly recommended free downloads to detect and eliminate spyware from your 'puter. The first one listed, Spybot, can even help to prevent your browser from being hijacked by some unwanted and unkind site. (that actually happened to me: the hijacker force-changed my start-page and made search engines direct to a bunch of unwelcome porn sites, but never again, thanks to Spybot!).. It's a good idea to get both programs and run them seperately when you're in the mood to get all the nasties off your 'puter. Sometimes (well... often, really) whatever one program doesn't detect, the other one will, and vice versa, and both have different (and very kind) features.

Spybot S&D was written by Patrick M. Kolla of Germany, who is fully dedicated to keeping his software free; he firmly believes that software for private use should be free. What a kind soul, bless his heart! However: download bandwith, further Spybot development, testing on different operating systems and such things don't come cheap. So if you download his software and like it, and if you can afford to kindly donate a couple of bucks, he deeply appreciates it, and can accept secure donations through PayPal. If a monitary donation isn't possible, he also would appreciate a prayer or blessing, or a wish for good luck, according to your beliefs. He's putting a great deal of time and effort into this amazing program, so whether it's a few $$, or a prayer, or nice bright blessing, good thoughts directed toward him and his loved ones, or all of the above, please please do so, it's the kind thing to do for the gift of his wonderful software.
