Special Needs Hardware I would like to have in my classroom
1. SmartNav (head-tracking system)
A mouse alternative that allows people with good head
control to completely control their computer. A tiny reflective dot
is stuck to the forehead, eyeglass frame, tip of nose. The transmitter/receiver
pictured above, sends infrared beams out, and senses reflections from the
dot. The SmartNav software (included) 'maps' head motion to cursor
motion.
HW-9-USB for all Windows (SmartNav AT) - $299
2. KeyRead (Junior ScreenReader)
A simple, but powerful, screenreader, that is tailored
for blind persons that may be new to using a computer, or
need a simpler, less expensive alternative to more costly
(and comprehensive) programs available. Works almost
entirely by the standard keyboard navigation controls,
the arrow keys!
Also...
Echoes each keystroke and word
Selective reading of screen (word processors, web pages,
email, Desktop, etc.) by word, line, sentence, paragraph, or
entire page
Selective reading of menus
Reading of dialog boxes and buttons
SW-22R - Registration Code for KeyRead for Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000
- $199
3. BigKeys Plus
This is a wonderful alternative keyboard for those with
vision impairments, and/or physical and/or
cognitive disabilities. All keys are easy to see:
1-inch square! 4 times normal size. Full tactile feedback, just like
regular keys. BigKeys Plus comes in QWERTY or ABC key layout (BigKeys LX
can be changed to ABC layout by you!) Easy-to-read key labels (large black
printing on bright-white keys, or white characters on black keys) LX Contains
all essential characters: 97 character keyset. Compatible with all
major software packages. (Alt key maps to Command key on USB Macs)
Just plug into your PC's keyboard or USB port (requires USB adapter*) or
your iMac, G3, or G4's USB port (requires USB adapter) in place of, or
in addition to your regular keyboard. 1 year replacement warranty
