Swami Sharvananda's Publication List
Most of Swamiji’s publications, covering a wide sweep of Vedanta and of
contemporary thoughts, resulted when he headed Ramakrishna Mission, Madras (currently Chennai). These works, published by Ramakrishna Vedanta Center, Chennai were mostly in English;
however, some appeared in Hindi, Telugu and in Sanskrit; most of them were renditions of the original Sanskrit
texts, some of were commentaries and the rest were general presentations. Each of these books appeared with copious
notes and broad preamble to provide a deeper context and understanding of the original works. His main focus
had been Upanishads; his major expositions delved in Mandukyo, Mundaka, Taittiriyo, Aitareyo, Prasno, Keno,
Svetasvaro, and Katho. Some of the finest universities in the world use his books as standard references; in that
category we could list, just in North America alone, at least the following few:
Syracuse University (New York), Cornell University (New York), University of Toronto (Toronto, Canada), Columbia
University (New York), University of Pennsylvania ( Philadelphia), Brown University (Rhode Island), Harvard
University (Cambridge, Massachusetts), University of Chicago (Illinois), etc.
After the establishment of Kanya Gurukul at Jhargram, by that time he was already in his mid-sixties, he had
several of his works published in spite of his deteriorating health with the help of his able disciple
Paribrajika Vedahridaya; among which are (a) Essays and Speeches (in English), (b) Swami Sarbbanander Patrabali
(in Bengali). For a more comprehensive list of his works, please use this link.
