Betta - Siamese Fighting Fish | ||||||

||||||
Bettas are one of the most popular fish species because of their beautiful fins and bright colors. Bettas are not aggressive towards all fish, only other male bettas. They may chase and nip at other fish that have long colorful fins. In most cases though, they won't do any serious damage. It is recommended that you keep only one male betta in a tank, as they will fight each other. Most times it will not be a fight to the death, but the loser may suffer some injuries. Male bettas will also chase and nip at any female bettas in your tank. If you are going to have a male and female betta in one tank, make sure you have lots of hiding spots for the female to escape the male. In many pet stores you can usually find bettas in small cups or "Betta Condo's". Usually you will hear "well they live in small ponds, so they can survive in the condo". While this is true, I personally do not find it humane. Fish need room to swim freely and have good air circulation. Many bettas will bite off their own fins because they are so unhappy in their tiny homes. Both of my bettas came with fin damage because they were living in small cups before I purchased them. It has taken some time but their fins are growing back nicely. If you really want to buy a betta and do not have room for a large tank in your house, at least buy a goldfish bowl (or one a similar size). Temperature: 75-78 degrees F Feeding Recommendations: Tropical Flake Food, Freeze Dried Bloodworms (supplement) Breeding: Egglayers. It is very difficult to breed bettas in a community tank. |
