The ideal size tank for this cichlid fish is at least a 50 gallon tank.  They are fairly peaceful for a ciclid but can become territorial during spawning. They should be kept with fish of a similar aggression level. They enjoy large-leaved plants with open areas for swwimming. The most common trait of the Firemouth is the colorful red markings on the throat and breast area, which is how the fish got it's common name. Females aren't as colorful as the males, but have a black spot on the dorsal fin.

Temperature: 75 - 81 degrees F

Breeding: Open-water brooder with parental family, though the female is more likely to be in charge of the brood.  Feed young with fine grade dry food.

Feeding reccomendations: Medium sized morsels of live and dry food.
