Don't buy "betta condos". I've heard many people say "but they live in puddles in the wild". Big deal. It would be like a human being living in a house the size of a bathroom stall. Most bettas will bite off their own tails and bash themselves against the glass because they are so unhappy. I have two bettas, one in a 15 gallon tank and the other in a 10 gallon. They are so happy to have gotten out of those little evil tanks of torture at the pet store. If you really want a betta and can't afford a large tank, please don't get one. Or just buy a goldfish bowl. At least they will have room to swim around in. Check out my Boycott AquaBabies page to read more about them!
Make sure your tank is well lit. Make sure you give your fish plenty of light. But make sure you don't leave the light on too long as it will heat up the water in the tank. Natural light is the best for fish, so try and position your tank in an area that is bright. Try not to put the tank under a window as algae will grow all over your tank and take over!
When buying fish, look for ones that are active and healthy looking. Never buy a fish if you think it may be sick. You don't want to bring home any diseases to your tank. If the fish are swimming erradically or their colors are dull, it's a good sign that they are sick. Also, never empty the water that you bring your fish home in into your own tank. Scoop the fish out with a net and dispose of the extra water. You should also let the bag float in the tank before you free the fish, so the temperature change isn't a shock to them. Don't worry if your wish look stressed when you first bring them home. It could take a few days even for them to get settled in their new home.
