Discussion
My Hypothesis was incorrect. I thought that the box
with some LEDs would have the most effect becauseit would be slightly
strong for daytime, but weak enough to imitate night. Instead, the box
with the most LEDs was the most effective. I think this is because the
imitation of sunlight is stronger.
As I was doing my science project, I realized that if I were to do it again, I would change a few things.
First, I would try to make sure that no light could escape the boxes.
The boxes that I'm using are boxes that
are actually used, but for my experiment, I needed
to be sure that each box had the same amount of outside
light. The boxes that I used had
small cracks where plenty of light could get in.
Second, I would find a way to give the plants
water. I couldn't find out how the plants got water, and I
couldn't come up with an efficient way for them to
get a sufficient amount of water. So every five days, I wet
a paper towel and put it over the ends of the
flowers. I didn't want to disturb the flowers, so I only watered
them 3 times through the
experiment.
Third, I would change the LED boxes around so
that they each had the same amount of LEDs and that one
box was turned on and off during the day. This would
imitate sunlight, so the flowers might react better to
this.
Forth, I would use different colored LEDs in other boxes to see if
color change has any effect on the flowers. I would
use mixed amounts of one color, two colors, of colors mixed with
regular light.
Fifth, I would try and find more information so that I could imitate
the way that flowers are shipped so that
the conditions would be the same.
Sixth, I would start earlier so I wouldn't feel so pressured for time!
The little information that
I managed to find about cut flowers said that they release moisture
into the air when they are shipped. I don't think that this is true
because of the flowers in the box with no LEDs dried out before the
fifth day. I do think that the LEDs have an effect on the flowers
because on the same day, the flowers in the box with twelve LEDs were
still damp and had a freshness about them that the others didn't. The
flowers in the box with six LEDs were still slightly damp, but didn't
have the same freshness.
