Trimester One

Nerf:Definition
Nerf is a soft toy that can be used inside without hurting people or furniture. It can be either a type of ball, or shoot Nerf Darts.

History

'Nerf' is a toy that was created for indoor sports. It started as a 4 inch ball, part of a new game idea (sort of an indoor volleyball) that was proposed to Parker Brothers. Parker Brothers dismissed the game, but kept the idea of the ball. They distributed it with the slogan "Throw it indoors; you can't damage lamps or break windows. You cant hurt babies or old people." Parker Brothers developed the ball into other kinds, i.e. Super Nerf Ball, the NERFoop (basketball), NERF football. The Nerf football became the most popular. The company changed hands in 1991, going to sister company Kenner Products. Then Hasbro bought the line through Tonka Corporation. They have expanded the line and given makeovers to existing products. The current Nerf line includes sports balls, guns and darts, and video game accessories.

Nerf: what it is
Nerf is a springy, foam-like material made from polyester reacting with diisocyanate, and carbon dioxide is released. Polyester resin reacts and more CO2 is released. The gas creates air pockets that have polyurethane in them, that create the soft and light material.

Projectile:Definition
An object on which the only force is gravity, if the effect of air resistance is neglected.
"A projectile is any object which once projected or dropped continues in motion by its own inertia and is influenced only by the downward force of gravity." (What is a Projectile?)
So, a projectile is influenced by gravity, its own inertia, and air resistance.

What is projectile motion?
Projectile motion describes the path that a projectile will take. With no air resistance, the launch angle for maximum horizontal range is 45 degrees. However, in the real world, air resistance causes the firing angle for maximum horizontal range to be different than 45 degrees.  The force of the air resistance varies as the square of the velocity.
Force = k times v squared

k is a constant that changes depending on the density of the air, shape of the projectile, the  cross-sectional area.

So, there is more force on the projectile at the launch and just before landing than there is at the top of its parabola.

So, for maximum range in air should a projectile be launched at more or lesse than 45 degrees?  Finding the answer to this question is what my project is about.

History
Galileo was the first scientist who realized that there was projectile motion. He separated motion into its vertical and horizontal components. He came to realize that any projectile's path will be a parabola. This explained why two objects dropped in a vacuum hit the ground at the same time, even if one is moving horizontally, because the vertical acceleration of both objects is the same.

Interesting facts:

When firing a cannon, it is fired at more then 45 degrees for maximum range. This is because the higher you go, the thinner the air, so the easier to travel through. The shell can go slightly farther before coming back down to earth.
