ARMENIA, JUNE 2000
The journey from Yerevan to Stepanakert, Nagorny Karabakh

The larger of the two peaks of Mt Ararat, view from the road out of Yerevan. Ararat is the symbol of Armenia and the name of a famous Armenian brandy, despite the fact that the mountain itself is in Turkey

Brightly-coloured Iranian lorries are easily recognisable on Armenian roads and can be seen quite frequently. Different religions haven't prevented Armenian-Iranian trade from flourishing over the past few years

Beaten eggs helped to cement the stones together in ancient churches such as this one at Noravunk, and the recipe obviously worked! Distress beacons could be lit from one church high up in the mountains and the priest in the next church would see it and respond

...and the rock they come from?
