CLINICAL EXPERIENCE (From Mar 1990 till date)
Surgical and Urology registrar:
I worked as a registrar to three consultants Mr. Rajratnam, Mr. Urquhart-Hay and Mr. J Chrisp. I attend 5 outpatient sessions, 5 Theatre sessions per week. With my house surgeon, I am responsible for the inpatient care in Palmerston North Hospital.

I shared 1:4 on call duty rota with general Surgical registrars. I covered urological as well as general surgical emergencies when on call. I was a part of trauma- team on call.

I have gained extensive experience in urology. I carried out independently procedures such as flexible cystoscopies, urethral dilatations, difficult catheterisations, supra-pubic cystostomies, etc in out-patient clinic. In the theatre I carried out video-urethro-cystoscopies, TURPs, TURBTs, electro-fulguration of bladder tumour recurrence, orchiopexies of maldescended testicles, inguinal hernia repairs, RGPs, etc under supervision. I have assisted in major operations like nephrectomies for renal tumours, Penectomy for Ca penis, cystectomies with construction of ileal conduits.

I used to participate in the clinical teaching sessions of the urology department. I also have participated in the monthly clinical audit of the urology department.

Paediatric Surgery:
I was working as S H O to Mr. R D Daniel (Consultant Paediatric surgeon).

I attended the referrals coming through the emergency department and GPs. Every week; I attend one outpatient clinic, two theatre sessions and two day-case surgery sessions. I used to be responsible for care of inpatients . I have gained experience in paediatric herniotomy, inguino-scrotal swellings, abdominal wall defects, and paediatric urological conditions such as hypospadias, vescico-ureteric reflux and congenital anomalies.

General Surgery:

I was working on the acute surgical ward 6 of Hull Royal Infirmary from Feb 99 to August 1999. I assessed and commenced initial management for surgical referrals from the accident and emergrncy of Hull Royal Infirmary. I was responsible for day-to-day care of inpatients, preparing for surgery and the post-operative management (involving close fluid-electrolyte, acid-base balance monitoring by means of inserting CVP lines, ABG analysis and supportive management).

I have done operations such as exploration of abdominal stabs, laparoscopic dissection of gall bladder, resection-anastomosis of bowel for cancers and benign conditions under supervision. I have done hernia repairs, appendectomies, incision and drainage of abscesses independently

Emergency Department:
I was working as SHO in the Emergency department of the Hull Royal Infirmary. It is the second most busy emergency department in the country, seeing about 100,000 patients per year.

I assessed the patients presenting to the E D. I was responsible for initial management of patients presenting with acute medical and surgical conditions, drug overdose, febrile illnesses and make appropriate referrals to the specialities. I was involved in resuscitating ill patients. I treated conditions such as foreign bodies in limbs and eyes, Colle's fracture, pyogenic abscesses, wounds and minor burns. I used to participate in the teaching sessions of the emergency Department.

General Surgery:

I was working for 5 months as a Surgical Senior House Officer to Mr. Hoile (Surgical Director and Consultant surgeon) at Medway Hospital, Gillingham.

I used to participate in a one in five on call duty rota. I was responsible for initial assessment of surgical patients presenting to the E D. I used to attend the out-patient clinical sessions, ward rounds, assist the registrar and consultant in operative surgery. I assisted Mr. Hoile for laparoscopic cholecystectomies, vascular surgery, thoracoscopic sympathectomies and other major procedures. Also, I performed under supervision operative procedures like appendectomies, herniorrhaphies and several minor operations. I used to participate in vascular radiology meetings and attend the teaching sessions of surgical faculty.

India and Middle East:

Before coming to the UK, I worked in India and in Muscat. As a Senior Surgical resident doctor in the Goa Medical College, I undertook a one in three on-call rota. I was responsible for management of inpatients, preoperative preparation, and postoperative care. I have done most major operations and performed several under supervision.

Some of the procedures that I have performed are appendicectomies, herniorrhaphies, excision of benign and malignant breast lumps, resection and anastomoses of bowel for benign and malignant conditions, operative management of blunt abdominal trauma and laparotomies for perforated duodenal ulcer, thyroidectomies, open cholecystectomies, dissections of axilla, groin and neck for secondary disease, open pyelo-uretero lithotomies and Freyer's prostatectomy . My duties included attending trauma and surgical cases in E D. I was a part of the trauma team.

Neurosurgery:
In Muscat, I was a SHO in NEUROSURGERY: I was actively involved in admitting patients from the E D, inpatient care, preparing them for surgery, and their post-op care. I participated in a one-in-four on call duty rota.

I assisted in neurosurgical emergency and elective surgery. Whenever appropriate, I sought the advice of my senior colleagues.
