This
is a general purpose freight loco. This class is still used fairly
regularly today, often being delegated some shunting duties as well.
The SAR needed a mainline loco with a lower weight. They came up
with the class 35, which is smaller and lighter that the class 34, and
also produces less power. Two different versions can be found. The
one series is a GE U15C, the other EMD GT18MC. According to David
Forsyth's pages, the 35600 series is of the EMD variety. Series 35200
and 35300 are also of the EMD variety. Series 35000 and 35400 are
GE locos. These locos can be M.U.ed up to 4 in a set.
