Class 14E Electric Loco

This is a high speed freight loco.  This class is still fairly new in South Africa.  What makes this class an interesting subject, is the fact that it uses a dual voltage capable system.  Yes, it can run on both 3Kv and 25Kv lines.  To make it even better, it will run on 3Kv DC and 25Kv AC.  It uses 4 Siemens motors, consuming 1020Kw of electricity per hour. I do not know a lot more about this loco, other than that it was first put into service in 1990.

Left Click for Larger Image This is a more square on side view of no 102.  Just visible on the top right is the panthographs.  Photographed at Sentra Rand, June 2001.
Left Click for larger Image No 102 on the other side.  Visible here is some of the grille details and the sanding pipes.  Also interesting is the coiled pipe on the bottom of the loco, just behind the cow cather under the door.  Anybody know what it is for?  Also, notice that there are not step wells on this side to reach the roof. Photographed at Sentra Rand, June 2001.

Left Click for larger Image The other end of no 102.  Nothing too interesting here, except for that little box on the bottom right hand side.  Again, the sanding pipes also visible.  Photographed at Sentra Rand, June 2001.
Left Click for Larger Image No 102 as seen from the front end.  The stopper beam was a little in the way to make any significant discoveries about the coupler area.  Photographed at Sentra Rand, June 2001.
Left Click for Larger Image No 107.  She came in for some minor repairs and a new windhield.  We could not find out what took out the windows, other than that the train hit something.  Of interest here is the coupler details, uncoupling levers and the array of hoses.  Also, not the horns, mounted on either side of the cow catcher.  The loco also has an access door on the front.  Photographed at Sentra Rand, June 2001.
