Constitution

 

 

Preamble

 

The Disabled Student Union is hereby founded as a result of concerned students seeing a need for an organization that is committed to the success of all students at Wright State University including those with disabilities and their allies.

 

 

Article I: Purpose

 

The disabled student union is to serve as an advocate for disabled students of all backgrounds.  This organization will serve to support, to educate, and to provide a place for social contact, with the underlying goal of providing a source of outreach to the community.

 

Article II: Membership

 

A.            Membership is open to any member of Wright State University or the surrounding community who has an interest in supporting the mission of the Disabled Student Union.  This includes students, faculty, staff, alumni, and outside supports. 

B.            Membership is blind to race, sex, color, religion, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or sexual orientation.

C.  Full membership is given to those who have attended at least fifty percent of general meetings.  The right to vote at meetings shall be conferred with full membership.

D.  There shall be no cost with membership to the Disabled Student Union.

 

 

Article III: Executive Board

 

The executive board shall consist of co-presidents, chief of staff, and director of internal affairs.  Members of the executive board must be students for at least one quarter at Wright State University.  This body shall convene on a weekly basis.

 

I. Copresidents shall be the chief executive officers of the DSU.  They shall be the spokespersons of the organization.The leadership responsibilities within the DSU shall be divided as equally as possible among two equally powered co-presidents.  Both copresidents should have understanding of all of all disabilities. 

 

The duties of the copresidents shall consist of:

1. Carry out the mission and vision of the organization.

2. Represent the organization and promoting the organization.

3. Chair and set agendas for  DSU general meetings and executive board meetings.

4.  Meet with the Director of the Office of Disability on biweekly basis.  This meeting shall take place at the earliest convenience of all interested parties.

5.  Appoint persons to offices that are vacated by resignation or impeachment.

 

II.The duty of chief of staff is to assist the co-presidents in implementing the mission of the organization.  The chief of staff shall be the main line of communication between the directors and the co-presidents.  The chief of staff is responsible for overseeing the directors and committees.  The chief of staff shall chair all DSU business meetings in case of the absence of the co-presidents.

 

III. Director of internal affairs is responsible for assisting the chief of staff with organizational management as well as staffing appropriate committees.  This includes taking minutes for all meetings, keeping membership and attendance records, keeping budgeting records, and depositing and withdrawing money.  The director of internal affairs shall chair the board of directors meeting in case of absence of chief of staff.

 

Article IV: Board of Directors

 

The board of directors shall consist of director of physically disabled student affairs, director of visually impaired student affairs,director of hearing impaired student affairs, director of mentally disabled student affairs, director of marketing, , director of social events, director of web communications, and the chief of staff.  The chief of staff shall chair the board of directors meetings.  The board of directors shall meet biweekly.

 

I. The duty of the physically disabled student affairs shall be responsible for representing all physically disabled students and their interests.

 

II. The duty of director of visually impaired student affairs shall be responsible for representing all visually impaired students and their interests.

 

III. The duty of director hearing impaired student affairs shall be responsible for representing all hearing impaired students and their interests.

 

IV. The duty of director of mentally disabled and learning disabled student affairs shall be responsible for representing students with mental disability and learning disability and their interests.

 

V. The duty of the director of marketing is to perform marketing functions and public relations functions.

 

VI. The duty of director of social events is responsible for social activities and enrichment of members.

 

VII. The duty of director of web communications is to be the webmaster of DSU and responsible for the website monthly.

 

Article V: Elections

 

The board of directors shall be elected by the majority of the general voting members of the organization. 

 

The executive board members shall be appointed by a commission.  The commission shall consist of the current co-president  and the current  board of directors excluding the chief of staff.  All active members shall be eligible to apply for executive board positions.

 

Article VI: Impeachment

 

Impeachment shall be proposed by one half of the voting members and approved by two third majority of executive board.

 

Article VII: Amendments

 

Amendments shall be proposed by the executive board and board of directors ratified by two-third of voting members.
