The Maryland Advisory Council on Historic Preservation*, met on February 29th, 2004 to consider demolition of the Odorite and
voted unanimously to recommend as follows:
- The Council has determined that the adverse effect
that would result from demolition of the Odorite Building is not acceptable.
- In recognition of the historic significance of the
Odorite Building and the long standing public opposition to its proposed
demolition, the Council asserts that preservation of the building is in the
best interest of the citizens of the State of Maryland and that the
University should make preservation of the Odorite Building a priority.
- The Council, therefore, recommends that the
University, in consultation with the Maryland Historical Trust and a qualified architectural
firm with expertise in historic preservation, should develop and implement a
design for the student center which combines new construction with adaptive
use of the historic Odorite Building and/or the two facades of the building.
