I come from a small town in India called Sedam. The
history of this town is little exciting and interesting historically. My
town
is supposed to be place where legendary Hidumbi - wife of Bheema from
Mahabharata lived ages ago. This is just hear say, I do not know how true it
is. It is a taluqa headquarter, Malkhed the capital of Rashtrakuta Empire
comes in this taluqa. Today Malkhed is just a small village with one small
fort and the pilgrimage site of Teekacharya's (Raghvendra swami's guru)
Brindavana (Grave, where the person voluntarily enters it when he is still
alive).
My town has a cute little railway station, which has the town on one side
and fields on the other side. Always been very peaceful in the nights to
take a walk, sit and chat with friends and eat Madeppa's (Name of the person
who makes this snack, he is world famous just in my town) Bhajji (Green
Chilies dipped in batter and deep fried). The whoz who of the town come to
this place pack the Bhajji's and go to the railway platform for a stroll and
a little round of gossip.
Talking about Gossip, the Gossip hub of my town is a small by lane know as
"Brahmin Galli", it is legendary how a person cannot passby the lane without
being subjected to all kinds of gossip by the ladies sitting in front of
their houses. Thanks to advent of cable telivision, it has reduced a little
because of the ladies being glued to the television sets inside the home
rather than sitting out and gossiping.
The town used to be surrounded by beautiful sunflower fields, today that has
been replaced by the huge cement factory which puts all its exhaust into the
air making my town more dusty. Well the people do not seem to care about it
much as it has provided employment to many. One side of the town is flanked
by Kamalavathi river, which used to have more water earlier than in recent
years.
The town has a history of religious clashes among different castes and sub
castes. Somehow it is better than the district headquarter of Gulbarga. Even
the climate is a bit cooler then Gulbarga which is notorious for the house
wall's radiating heat in Summer and people throwing loads of water on the
walls to cool it down.
I guess I can boast about my house having the biggest perimeter in the town
(not the biggest house), most of it being just garden space. I love my
house, it has tall Nilgiri trees and other trees. It keeps my place shady
and cool, my house having huge windows on either side helps in keep the
house cross ventilated. Every December the migratory birds from Russia pass
by my town and some of them are attracted to the trees in our perimeter,
during their stay our perimeter has a white carpeting of their droppings !.
One side of the house is flanked by a movie theatre, in childhood days I
used to laze in my backyard and listen to the movie dialogues before
deciding to watch a movie.
Do not get ideas that being in small town is a fun thing or the life is so
peaceful. It has its own drawbacks. For example many people in the town
recognized me and my parents always had report about the things I did on
street like me standing by to watch some roadside magic show or trying to
eat some roadside junk food. They knew it and I did not care about people so
it was ok. One other hard thing is living up to expectation of the people,
people still ask me if I am studying medicine. For them its the most logical
thing as my parents are doctors themselves and I should be studying that to
take over from them. But then these are just conversation starters so I
don't care.
Couple of other tit bits about my town. It boasts of a private airstrip
thanks to Mr. Birla, maybe someday I shall get to take a plane and land in
my town. One of the fastest express trains in India, Rajdhani has a stop in my town for
some political reason. |
