Starbase Tango History
Space stations have been in existance since the early years of the Federation,
and many different designs have been utilized in that time. The most successful to date
has been the Ournal series of spacedocks.
The Ournal series has been in existance since the mid 21st century, it's "mushroom" shape provided excellent capabilities for offense, defense and repair facilities for space ships of all sizes, but by the 2330's Starfleet faced a new problem. With the increase in technological capability came larger starship designs. The sheer size of the design was far beyond anything previously thought of, a factor which weighed heavily on the minds of the design team.
The original proposals called for an all-new station configuration, but the detailed design work for this would have taken at least fifteen years to complete. In order to cut this figure down to as low as possible it was decided to follow the design of the successful Ournal series. The Ournal stations needed considerable re-working of their main docking areas and the doors just to fit the new large ships in. The end result was a larger variation of the station, and Starfleet began to build the new, much larger facilities which would be capable of handling the largest starships.
Starbase Tango is one of the newest of these Ournal series of spacedocks. It is capable of docking multiple ships as large as the Sovereign Class, as well as several hundred support vessels including shuttles and runabouts.
Starbase Tango was constructed in orbit above Earth beginning in 2360 and was towed to it's final location in the Eta Tauri system. MCPO Ke'nar'ek oversaw the towing and continuing interior construction on route, and upon it's placement in orbit above Eta Tauri II in 2373. The USS Pegasus arrived a few weeks after completion with the first permanant crewmembers, including the new Starbase Commander - Steven Mace. Additional crew and civillians would continue to arrive over the next 3 years.
Teams from the starbase began surveying the planets in the system, and plans were drawn up for a colony on Eta Tauri II, a Shipyard/Repair facility on, (and in orbit of) Eta Tauri I, and a training facility/test range for Eta Tauri III. Eta Tauri IV was reserved for future development.
