Star Fleet Academy - Medical Department

Requirements for entry into Starfleet Medical Corps:

All physicians seeking entry into the Starfleet Medical Corps must have completed four years of comprehensive training at:

Person seeking admittance from non-aligned or systems outside of the Federation must seek special permission from the Star Fleet Medical Command and must obtain licensure within the Federation.

All physicians seeking positions must likewise have appropriate licensure and board certification to practice.  Upon acceptance, one additional year of training will be required.  This training will include the basics of military discipline and protocol as well as the rules and regulations of the Star Fleet Command as dictated elswhere in this manual (please refer to the relevant sections).

Physicians must also have either completed an accredited residency training program in the area they seek to practice in, or have entered a Star Fleet Medical Residency Program.

Star Fleet Medical is a 6 year course!
Star Fleet Counseling is a 4 year course


Year 2 - Departmental focus

No Cadet may exceed 5 classes in the 5th year. SFMD 4300 - 3rd year residency (at Clinics or Earth-based facilities, 6 month on Starship/base)

6th Year - Residency
Each Cadet is required to take between 1 and 5 classes per year.
No Cadet may exceed 5 classes in the 6th year. Medical:

Policies, procedures, expectations and requirements.

SFMD 1002 - First Aid
Basic procedures for emergencies.

SFMD 1003 - Medical devices/technology
Usage of Medical Tricorders, Medi-kits, Hyposprays, etc...

SFMD 1004 -  Introduction to Xenomedicine
Course outlines basic principles and approaches to patients from other planets and systems as well as novel situations and species.  Essentials of physical examination will be covered here as well as basic physiology.

SFMD 1005 - Emergency Medical Procedures I
Triage, Emergency Operations, etc...

SFMD 1100: Introduction to Xenopharmacology
This is a comprehensive course on the pharmacology of other species focusing primarily on the metabolism and kinetics of medicines in the patients.

SFMD 1200: Introduction to Xenopathology
Focuses on disease processes and illnesses that affect other species.  Species examined will include all Federation species.  Course will be taught with a Systems approach.

SFMD 2002:  Principles of Xenoethics and Culture
Doctors will be trained in the cultural norms of other worlds with respect to medical treatment and diagnosis.  Guest lecturers will include physicians from Qo'nos, Romulus, Cardassia, and other worlds within the Federation and from outside.

SFMD 2004 Introduction to Xenomedicine II
A continuation of SFMD 1003 with a focus on treatment strategies and cultural prohibitions.
Prerequisite: SFMD 1003

SFMD 2100 Xenopharmacology II
Focuses more on practical treatment.
Prerequisite: SFMD 1004

SFMD 2200: Xenopathology II
Emphasis on Federation aligned cultures.
Prerequisite: SFMD 1005

SFMD 3001 - Xenomedicine Simulated Patient Labs
Physicians will be allowed to practice diagnostic and treatment skills on holopatients.

SFMD 3002 - Medical History
Those who do not learn form the past are doomed to repeat it and as history has shown physicians are often at the heart of many of the greatest atrocities in human and other species history.  The role of medicine in history will be examined on Earth and other worlds.

SFMD 3200 - Xenopathology III
Emphasis on non-Federation cultures.
Prerequisite: SFMD 2004


SFMD 4001 - Practicum
Physicians will work 2 half days per week in the infirmary of a Federation Starbase

SFMD 4100 - 1st Year Residency
At a UFP medical facility

SFMD 4200 - 2nd Year Residency
