Security Officer Duties

Security Officers have a huge amount of duties, which is why the department is one of the largest on the base.  Security is responsible for:

Ensure the saftey of all personnel on a ship or station

All people, (civilians, Star Fleet members, UFP members, Ambassadors and visitors) have the right to feel safe while on the station.  To ensure this Security Officers must provide enough freedom to allow privacy, but must be able to apprehend anyone who commits a crime - or is suspected of commiting a crime.  This "saftey" extends to the personal belongings of an person - so long as it is not illegal in the UFP.  Security does have the right to search the quarters, belongings and/or person of anyone suspected of wrongdoing - provided they have authorization from either the Station CO, XO or ranking JAG officer.

Investigate any and all crimes

When a crime happens, security members must immediately close off the crime scene and inform OPS.  The COS is immediately called to duty regardless of shift, as well as any needed specialists.  The crime scene should be blocked off until proper investigation of the scene can take place to prevent contamination of the evidence.  Marine squads can be called in to provide assistance in sealing the area if needed (for example - on the Promenade).  Security personnel must collect all evidence available, preserve it if possible, and document it immediately to prevent contamination.  The evidence must then kept secure until Science or Medical teams can examine the samples (if needed) to provide forensic evidence to prove a suspect's guilt / innocence.

Question suspects and witnesses (when needed)

All persons are innocent until proven guilty!
All potential witnesses or suspects are entitled to council during questioning.
If it is deemed necessary, then interrogation of any suspects or eyewitnesses is allowed, but no Security Officer or other officer participating in the interrogation shall badger, entrap or use any other procedure unlawful according to the Articles of the Federation, to get a confession.

Take any suspects into custody after reading them their rights, and inform the CO of such action

If a suspect is to be arrested or held for longer than a few hours, the COS (or Deputy in his absence) must inform the CO (or XO in his absence) of such action.  The suspect must be given just cause for his/her arrest, and read their rights under UFP law.  If proof of the suspects guilt is not found within 48 hours of the arrest, the suspect must be released, but Security can prevent suspects from leaving the station until innocence is proved.
All suspects in a murder, rape or treason shall be held in the brig with no exceptions. All others may be left in confinement to quarters (determined by the COS).  All Starfleet personnel are entitled to a fair and impartial hearing by way of a court martial pending the outcome of the investigation.

Man Security offices, brig and holding cells

All security offices, which include the Brig, all holding cells, and OPS are to be manned at all times.  High Security areas must have an armed guard, in addition to regular built in security features as needed.

Provide Security assistance on Away Teams/Missions when necessary

On any away team or mission, Security Officers must ensure the safety of all away team members to all ends, unless it would directly violate the prime directive, break local laws or statutes, or kill the native residents of any culture.  If there is clear and present danger to members of the team, it may be necessary to kill, but all precautions must be taken to prevent such action.

Work with Tactical and Marine teams for training excercises

Security, Tactical and Marine teams must participate in joint excercises as needed.  This will ensure that they are able to provide assistance when needed, and that all members can work together successfully.

Work with Tactical and Marine teams for specialized assistance (when needed)

If additional teams are needed to provide specialized assistance, Security Officers may request it from the Tactical or Marine departments as needed.  This may include (but is not limited to):
- Weaponry repair/operation and training.
- Planet/Ground-based Security operations.
- Additional Security for large areas.
- Tactical advice/training.

Provide additional protection to VIP's (ambassadors, delegates, etc...)

When needed, Security Officers must provide added protection to VIP visitors and/or residents.  This would include (but is not limited to):
- Ambassadors
- Delegates from other cultures
- Delegates from other UFP members
