Introduction

Welcome to the SouthBeach Tutor! This site was developed by us, your SouthBeach Community Leaders, to answer common questions about GeoCities tools and rules. Before going any further, we would like to define certain terms that we use in this site.

A web page, also known as a Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) file, is a document formatted in HTML code and found in the world wide web. A web site, on the other hand, is a collection of web pages as well as other types of files utilized by the said pages.

In GeoCities, a web site is also known as a homestead. If you have applied for free membership in GeoCities, then you automatically have a web site or a homestead with 11 megabytes of free space. Note that you, a GeoCities member and consequently the owner of a homestead, is also known as a homesteader.

A neighborhood is a collection of GeoCities homesteads with related themes. Incidentally, SouthBeach is a GeoCities neighborhood for "hanging out, meeting, greeting, seeing and being seen."

Your Community Leaders are themselves homesteaders who have volunteered to answer GeoCities-related questions as well as to make sure that all homesteads fall within the GeoCities Content Guidelines. All community leaders are friendly, competent and well-trained so don't hesitate to contact any of them in case you still have questions after going through the tutorials.

At this point, we would like to orient you to the different conventions we use in this site. First, all links are in green, whether you have already visited them or not. Moreover, for your convenience, some of the pages referred to in the links show up in a new browser window while others show up in the same browser window. Second, all headers are in blue. These headers tell you the part of the site you are in. Third, we included notes (information which you should be aware of), tips and warnings in all of the tutorials. Last, the buttons that will help you navigate through the different tutorials are presented below. The leftmost button is the "back" button, the button which will take you to the previous page; the button on the middle is the "menu" button, the button which will take you to the main menu; and the rightmost button is the "next" button, the button which will take you to the next page.

All the articles and tutorials in this site are accessible from the main menu and are divided into four categories: the basic, intermediate, advanced and specials categories. Tutorials in the basic category will help new members of GeoCities. On the other hand, tutorials in the intermediate and advanced categories will be of value to homesteaders who want to add some spice to their sites. The specials category will be composed of articles that will tackle specific elements of web design, among these are accessibility issues and the use of HTML editors.

For your convenience, we have included snap shots of the different GeoCities tools we will be referring to in our tutorials. Do note that we used a Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 browser running in an IBM compatible personal computer in these snap shots. But the said shots will still be similar to the ones you will see in your screens when you access the different GeoCities tools whatever browser or platform you are using.

Note that all the tutorials are very graphics-intensive. But rest assured that we tried our best to keep the file size of the images we used as small as possible. Furthermore, we assure you that all the tutorials will be worth your wait.

We designed the whole site to be as accessible as possible. If for any reason you cannot access a part of the site, feel free to contact one of the SouthBeach Community Leaders.

Please click on the "menu" button to return to the main menu.
