Adrien doesn't have a drop of Porte in him, even though his father was a full-blooded Portier. And even though his immediate family thought that this was a wonderful thing, Adrien didn't see it that way. The other noblemen were Portiers. The important people were Portiers. And he was permanently excluded from that club. He blames his mother Gianna for it; her dull Senzavista blood must've worked to keep him from his birthright. Adrien is frequently angry, unhappy and frustrated. He's a proficient swordsman and likes to duel Portiers; that makes him feel a little better. He attended the university at Kirk, and lording his superior knowledge, especially in matters of astronomy, over others makes him feel a little better. He's continually out to prove that lord Adrien St-Laurent is just a good - no, better! - than his peers and even his superiors. He gets along with almost no one, including most of his family. His sneering attitude is off-putting, as is his temper. His father was a dandyish ladies' man, but he inherited none of that charm. His attitude toward his mother has turned into outright hostility and occassionally violence. He deeply resents his aunt Countess Odessa Blanchard, both for her Porte ability and because she doesn't seem to have realized that he's the head of the St-Laurent family now. She might have "advised" his father into her puppet, but not him! His father was weak. His infamous uncle (Tigran Mondavi is Gianna's half-brother) doesn't take care to conceal his debauched excesses, which is just careless. The entire Blanchard family is a bunch of superstitious idiots.
The only person on Theah about whom witnesses have heard Adrien say a sincere good word is his twin, Giselle. Giselle is a smart girl, and she's careful, and she doesn't try to run his life. (She also makes Adrien's life considerably easier by smoothing the feathers that he ruffles, even if he isn't consciously aware of that.) He wants her to have the best possible husband, not at all realizing that his odious behavior is making most of the better candidates keep well away from the St-Laurents.
