Imperial History – The Founding of the Glorious Empire - as related by an Imperial Guard recruiter Hundreds of years ago, our great ancestors came from across the seas in their little boats, royal refugees driven away from their homeland by unjust conquerors. Determined that their blood should not pass from this world, they undertook the perilous voyage from that far place, undergoing many tribulations, until they landed on the north shores of what is now our Empire. Each prince took for himself a different choice piece of land upon which to settle his people. There was no cause to fight, for there was much good land available. Each blessed man or woman created a small but strong community, which propered under their vigilant care. As the years wore on, the people began to realize that they were not alone. To their south was a great forest. It was very large and a great boon to the people, for no stout trees grew near the seacoast. When truly strong lumber was needed, perhaps to wall a city for safety, trees from this forest were felled and floated down rivers to the building site. When people would go to the forest to harvest this bounty, they discovered that there were Elves living within the woods. The Elves insisted the wood was theirs, and would not let the men harvest any of it if they could. The princes were perplexed. They had never met Elves before, and did not know they were evil and plotting their deaths within those great leafy boughs. One man knew. Nargo the Wise was a valiant warrior, but also gifted with Sight to know the events to come. This made him so wise. He foresaw that the Elves would try and kill his people. He tried to rally troops, but many were uncertain and hesitated. And then the Elves struck, terribly, on a small village that had no defense. People immediatey saw that Nargo was correct and flocked to his banner. Thousands strong, they marched against the Elves. The battles are chronicled in many accounts, most famously in Nargo's own "Against the Elves." In the end, Nargo was victorious. He set a city where the greatest victory was been won, and people flocked there, wishing to swear allegiance to him and so benefit from his great wisdom and strong sword arm. The descendants of Nargo the Wise have ruled our great empire, named for its founder, ever since. But in the four hundred and seventy three years since, no one has been able to deal the Elves such a blow as he did. If false advisors had not lead him to ignore his misgivings, he would have killed them all. But instead, a few survived, and now they lurk in the Kangrel and Legasha Forests, waiting to snatch unwary travellers or even raiding our cities, killing women and children in a bloody unholy rage. Their dark gods require them to spill human blood in sacrifice, and this they do, hoping to grow strong enough to challenge Imperial might. Now, our valiant Imperial Guards stand between the helpless populace and the Elven menace. Just as the Warriors of the Golden Shield fought under Nargo's banner, so too do our loyal Guards fight under that same banner, acting as the Sword of Nargo thoughout the ages, protecting his people even when he has passed. Ever loyal to the people, ever a threat to the Elves, ever stout and stalwart in the face of any danger to the Empire – these are our Imperial Guards. Back to the Nargoth Empire.
