My main interest is to study larvae of scarab
beetles, mainly their morphology and, when possible, biology. The
project on which I am working now is a modest attempt to try to clarify
some obscure points of phylogeny within the superfamily Scarabaeoidea
based on morphological characters of their immature stages (=larvae).
Within this virtually endless general direction, I hope to be able to
concentrate on larvae of the families Passalidae, Lucanidae, Geotrupidae,
and Scarabaeidae (subfamily Scarabaeinae - dung beetles). All attempts
would be made to rear in lab from field collected females still unknown
larvae of the genus Glaresis, which now is considered to be the only member
of its own family: Glaresidae, the sister-group of the rest of the. I
started my work as a member of the University of Pretoria Scarab Research
Group in October 2000 and, likely, would be here for a couple years.
Besides scarab larvae, I am interested with immature stages of other beetles, particularly those of the superfamily Staphylinoidea (rove beetles and allies). |
| My major non-entomological interest is travelling, particularly
mountain hiking. I was lucky to hike in Ukrainian Carpatians, Caucasus,
mountains of former soviet Middle Asia (Uzbekistan, Tadjikistan, Turkmenistan,
and Kirgizstan), and Cordillera de Talamanca in Costa Rica. When in Africa
I hope to get to Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania to see if their mountains are
as rough as those in Russia. My e-mail address is vvgrebennikov@zoology.up.ac.za |
