Outsiders
Outsiders of the great New York do not understand the true meaning of the New York way. Outsiders have a negative vision about New York which upsets New Yorkers because they do not know what New York truly symbolizes. To New Yorkers, their city defines a different kind of city. It is portrayed as a city within a city. Each person has their own feelings about New York City and what it means to them
New York can be seen as very horrible, or even very interesting. In the city, anything can happen and that is why the city has just as much horror as it does wonder. Most New Yorkers realize this, but sometimes there is nothing that can be done to change what goes on. For the new comers to the city, they have no idea what the city is all about and will never be able to realize the negative and the positive elements of the city. In "City of Angels," by David Sedaris, the new comer Bonnie was seen as the outsider and feared the people and events that occurred in the city. Bonnie felt uncomfortable about certain situations or encounters with different people. She comes from North Carolina and has heard many different rumors and negative comments about the City. On her way to New York, she takes a cab and is very rude to the cab driver explaining why she does not want to get ripped off and thinks he is going to rob her. In this quote A I knew exactly what he was up to. I know the rules, I= m not stupid, so I wrote down his name and license number and said I= d report him to the police if he tried any funny business. I didn’t= t come all this way to be robbed blind and I told him that...@ Bonnie was not to be taken lightly, she was a A visiting American who finds more warmth in Tehran then they will in New York, a city founded on the principle of Us versus Them.@ Bonnie was the outsider anywhere they went. She would make comments and remarks about anything she felt was not to her best interest. At a restaurant, she pleaded that the waitress overcharged her for buying a milk shake when the price was right in front of her on the menu. It was as if she had to argue, or insist on everything that didn’t= t go her way. She says A I wanted to go to a Broadway show, and here you= re talking about a movie I could see back home for three dollars and fifty cents. I flew five hundred miles to see New York, and all I got was a chocolate milk shake and a plate of hash browns. Some damn trip this turned out to be.@
In Allen Ginsberg= s poem A Mugging,@ there is a lot of symbolism and imagery that is said throughout the poem. The way that he describes things in the poem has a way of jumping into your mind, and forming a picture of what the words could actually look like. For an example A Tonite I walked out of my red apartment door on East tenth street= s dusk- Walked out of my house ten years, walked out in my honking neighborhood.@ These first two sentences really put an image in your head of what the author is explaining. The detail of the writing puts pictures in your mind about what New York could really look like, and even sound like. The honking neighborhood of East tenth street dusk. Cars driving by with a misty and gloomy fog around the street lamps. A long narrow street with few people around and dark dirty buildings surrounding the area. The sight of that reminds me of New York City. This poem really makes you think about the city in all types of ways that are portrayed throughout the poem. A Whole street a bombed out face, building rows= eyes and teeth missing, burned apartments half the long block, gutted cellars, hallways= charred beams...@ The streets cracked that looks like a face, the eyes and teeth missing, the burned apartments are down half the block,. The cellars are empty and hallways and beams are charred from fires and heat. These quotes are all examples of what New York City looks like and what it really means when you think about what the words actually mean. Outsiders that come to New York City would not know this kind atmosphere because they have never experienced it before. If someone were to stay in New York for a while, they would see how the atmosphere would really affect their lives and the environment around them.
Everyone has their own opinion about New York City, but no one can ever tell the truth until they have actually been there and seen what the city is really all about. Some people tell stories about the city and some of them are true, but some of them are not. Don= t ever believe something someone tells you unless you have seen it, or done it yourself.
