How do you divide your grades (levels) and what ages?

 Ages 4-6: Kindergarten, 6-12: Elementary or Primary School, 12-15: Junior High or Secondary School, 15-18: Lyceum, 18 and up: University.

 In our school we have Compulsory Secondary Education (E.S.O.) from 12 to 16 years old. From 16 to 18 we prepare our pupils to go to the University; it’s what we call the “Batxillerat”.

When does your school usually start and when does it finish? (namely, the duration of a school year) ?

 Our school usually starts in mid-September and finishes in mid-June.

 (Collège des Tarterêts) Our school starts in early September and ends in June (earlier for those who have to pass exams, at the end of Collège and Lyceum).

 Our school always starts the 1st of September and finishes in mid-June. So it’s a little bit more than 10 months. Seniors finish school year in the middle of May.

When and how long is the duration of your holidays (e.g. Christmas, Easter)?

 Christmas holidays start on December 23rd till January 6th (2 weeks). Easter is a movable holiday so there are no exact dates of our holiday, but it is usually in April and it's for 2 weeks. Other: 30th of January, 1st of May.

(Jacques Prevert) Toussaints: 10 days in November, Christmas: 15 days in December, Winter: 15 days in February, Easter: 15 days in April.

 (Sonia Delaunay) The duration of our holidays are: two weeks in December, two weeks in February, two weeks in April and one week in October.

 (Collège des Tarterêts) We have one week in November, then approximately 10 days around Christmas, plus 2 weeks in February, then 2 more in April. All French pupils don't go on holidays at exactly the same period (in February and April) depending on the area they live in.

 Summer: 6 weeks (August - June/July); winter: 2-3 weeks. All states have the same amount of holiday weeks.

 We have Christmas holidays from 23rd of December to 4th or 5th of January. Our Easter holiday is only 1 week long, in April.

Do you have any national holidays, which ones and when?

 We have three main national holidays. The first is on 28th of October. Besides, only in Thessaloniki, October 26th is a religious holiday. The second is on 17th of November. (Revolution against the dictatorship). The third is on 25th of March. (Independence day)

 (Sonia Delaunay) We have got 4 national holidays the 1st of May, the 8th of May, the 14th of July ( but there is no school anyway) and the 11th of November.

  (Montanari) Here in Italy there is four holidays. The first is on 25th of April (Liberation day). The second is on 1st May (Labour day). The third is on 1st November (a religious holiday) and the forth is on 8th December (a religious holiday).

 Spain's National Day is the 12th October. In Catalonia, where we live, we have our own National Day (the 11th September). The 6th December is the Day of the Constitution. Other days are: 6th January (the three Western Kings), 1st May (Workers day), 24th June (King’s day), 15th August (St. Maria day), 1st November (Death’s day), 8th December (Immaculate) and 25th and 26th December (Christmas day and St Esteva). As we have so many holidays, some years we have to work on some of them.

 (DavKat) We have many national holidays: Bank holidays usually on Mondays we have about 5 of those. Unlike the rest of Europe we do not have public days off on 15th August.

How do the students come to school? Do you have school buses?

 Our school does not provide us with school buses, so students mainly come to school on foot.

 (Sonia Delaunay) We come to school by bus, by bicycle and on foot. Our school doesn't have any school buses, we have to use public buses.

 (Collège des Tarterêts) Most of us walk to school, as we don't live far. Otherwise there are town buses.We don't have school buses.

 They come mainly walking as we live in a small town (12,000 inhabitants). Many of them come driving their scooters and some of them come by their parents' car.

 (DavKat) Pupils make their own way to school as they live near to the school. If they live more than 3 miles away and the parents get state benefits they get a free bus pass. We do not have school buses certainly not in London. May be in the country side schools.

 Our school is mixed day and boarding. Day scholars either walk to school or come on bicycles. We do not have a school bus yet.

What lessons are taught in each grade (level)? (mandatory and optional)?

 The lessons which are taught in each grade are: First year: mandatory Greek Language, Greek Literature, Ancient Greek, History, Religion, Mathematics, English, Biology, Geography, Computers, Physical education, Technology, Home science, Arts, choice of French or German. Second year: mandatory Greek Language, Greek Literature, Ancient Greek, History, Religious studies, Mathematics, English, Physics, Chemistry, Geography, Computers, Physical education, Technology, Home science, choice of French or German. Third year: mandatory Greek Language, Greek Literature, Ancient Greek, History, Religious studies, Mathematics, English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computers, Physical education, Social and Political Education, Careers counceling (what students can do after secondary school and it helps the students to find out their interests and talents), Arts, choice of French or German. In Greece, Music is taught at all levels but this year in our school there is no music teacher. There are many optional lessons only in Lyceum.

 (Collège des Tarterêts) Most lessons are obligatory in the first and second grade of our school: French (5 hours per week), Maths, English, History and Geography, Civic education, P.E, Drawing, Biology, Technology, Music. You add Physics from the second grade onwards, plus a choice of Latin (optional), to be continued in the third and fourth grades. In those last two years, students have to choose a second language (German or Spanish; most choose Spanish). We work approximately 30 hours a week, plus club hours and extra hours for those needing help.

 The lessons which are taught in each grade are 14-18: 1st year: Literature, Hungarian Grammar, History, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Geography, Physical Education, Arts, Music, People and Enviroment, choice (2) of English, German, French, Russian and Latin. 2nd year: Same as the first year, except we have Biology instead of People and Environment, And we have a Computer Science. 3rd year: The same, except we don’t have any more Geography and Music, and we can take 2 extra classes of 2 different subject. 4th year: As in third year, but the students have no more Chemistry. The new subject is the Philosophy.

 (San Benedetto) 11 mandatory, some optional (the teachers of each form include them in their plan in the beginning of the school year) Mandatory: Italian language, History, Geography, Mathematics, Sciences, English or French, Artistic education, Musical education, Technical education, Physical education (Gym) and Catholic religion (but the parents can decide if their children will be taught this lesson). In our school plan, named 'Offerta formativa' (Teachers write it, in the beginning of each year) there is a list of optional lessons or activities. Teachers of every form decide together which of these lessons or activities will be taught.

 (A.Pacinotti) In the morning we have 5 lessons, a total of 32 hours a week. In the afternoon, we have music, science, arts, sports and many others (laboratories).

  (Montanari) Every day there are 5 lessons (30 hours per week) and junior school (scuola media level) lasts three years. Here are the subjects (mandatory): Italian Language, Italian Literature, History, Religion, Maths Geography, English or French, Physical Education, CDT, Arts, Music. There is a bilingual course (33 hours) in which you study 2 foreign languages (French and English). Finally there is a "tempo prolungato" course (36 hours). Parents can choose the course they prefer.

 10-12 years old: compulsory: Portuguese, Maths, Foreign Language(English or French), Science, Geography, History, Handwork, Arts, Physical Education 12-15 years old: the same as before, plus second foreign language, Physics, Chemistry 15-18: Depends on the course of studies, but always Portuguese, Foreign Language (English, French or German) and Philosophy as compulsory subjects.

If your school is public, is there any tuition fees or do the students have to pay for materials used during the school year?

 There are no tuition fees, but students have to buy their own special materials which is used during the school year.

 (Sonia Delaunay) The school is public, we have to pay for technology about 3 US$.

 (Collège des Tarterêts) There are no tuition fees, all students have to buy is their own material, plus P.E clothes and shoes, also some material in Technology and Drawing.

 Parents must pay a kind of school fee to give the school the chance to buy better educational material and to offer its students better teaching (computer science, seminars etc)

 When the students reach the secondary level they have to pay a fee. All students must pay for school materials, except the ones from poor families.

 Yes, they have to pay a small amount of money for the lab and sport materials, photocopies, etc.

 (DavKat) State school pupils do not pay fees of any sort nor do they pay for any thing like books or exercise books.

 (Gumley House) No fees. It is officially illegal to charge for anything. Parents are asked to make a small voluntary contribution to pay for extra resources. Pupils do pay for some small items of equipment (e.g.a calculator) but we have to supply in cases of financial hardship

 Students pay for both tuition fees, boarding fees and other over-head costs. The government supports poor students through a Bursary Scheme.

Are the books free or are they paid for? If the books are given by the school, do they have to be returned at the end of the school year?

 All the books, we use, are given free of charge and we do not need to give them back to school, except for our English books which must be returned at the end of the year.

 Books are free, given by the school and have to be returned. That’s the reason why school books are in bad condition. All is paid by the state. But there is a volunteer collection by the parents, called "Elternspende".

How many hours of school lessons do the students do a day?

 The students do 7 hours of school lessons every day, apart from Friday, on which they do 6 hours of school lessons due to the fact that this year there is no music teacher.

 (Collège des Tarterêts) We do about 7 hours a day at school, sometimes 8, and never more than 4 on Wednesday mornings. It depends on our time tables, those being different for all classes.

 Our school shares the same building with another Secondary School, so there are two shifts. One week we go to school in the morning. Then lessons start at 8:00 a.m. and finish at 13:40 p.m. The other week we go to school at noon, so lessons start at 14:15 p.m. and last till 19:40 p.m.

Does your school have an indoor gymnasium? What equipment does it have to offer? What sports are taught at your school? Are there basketball courts, volleyball courts etc. and which ones?

 Our school does not have an indoor gymnasium but when the weather is very bad we do gymnastics in the room which is for many uses. We also have many balls for volleyball, basketball, football and a few mats for gymnastics. There is a basketball court, which is also used as a football field, and a volleyball court.

 (Sonia Delaunay) The school has a gymnasium. We have: Basketball court, football court and tennis table.

 (Collège des Tarterêts) Our gymnasium is not in the school, so our P.E teachers use different gymnasiums in the area depending on the activities and on the timetables. There aren't any courts inside either, so we always leave the school to practise, though never very far. We practise many different sports, sometimes usual ones sometimes original ones. Our activities range from swimming to outdoor climbing, from dancing to judo practising...

 We have an indoor gymnasium (small) with horizontal bar, an outdoor football court, and an indoor basketball court. Equipment: balls (volleyball, soccer, basketball, handball), ingot, and so on. Sports: swimming, handball, basketball, soccer, volleyball, and so on

 (Sonia Delaunay) In the computer room, there are 13 computers. We have also 16 computers in the technology room.

 (Collège des Tarterêts) We have 3 computer rooms, each big enough for around 12 students at a time, or more if we work in pairs. But we can't all be connected to the Internet, not yet. We do experiments in Chemistry and Biology too.

 We have two computer rooms with ten computers connected to the Internet. We have one computer for each of the following: administration (2), school direction, every department. Besides, we have two computers also connected to the Internet in our library which are free access for our students.

 There are 2 computer rooms. Each has 24 computers. Each computer can be connected to Internet. We have scanners, printers, CD recorders, video camera, digital photo-camera, two of the computers are suitable for connecting cameras, for the videoconference.

 (Collège des Tarterêts) There are many clubs, ranging from chess contests, to aeronautics studying, the school newspaper, chemistry, silk painting, drama class and last year there was a choir too.

 Our school does not offer meals. Students and teachers can buy something to eat or to drink from the school's buttery.

 (Sonia Delaunay) Our school offers lunch and we take it in a school restaurant.

 (Collège des Tarterêts) We have a lunch room, very large, but most of us go home for lunch. Also, once in the year(usually in October) and for the First Grade only we have a balanced breakfast at school as part of a global program concerning education on food(organized by the nurse).

 Only a Cafeteria where students and teachers can buy something to eat or to drink (sandwiches, pencakes, pizza, soups, sweets, coffee, tea, coke, water etc)

 Our school does not offer meals, so the students and teachers have to go to the other high school in our town. That high school has a restaurant.

 Yes, a private company offers breakfast and lunch. Most students have breakfast in the school courtyard but most of them have lunch at home.

 (DavKat) Dinner is provided at subsidized costs to pupils and free for those whose parent get state benefits. British schools always have a dinner hall. School dinners is a very traditional thing in the UK. It has to provided by law.

 (Gumley House) Lunch. The students eat in the Dinning Hall.

 Day scholars: Lunch, Boarding scholars: Breakfast, lunch and supper. The students eat in the Dining Hall.

How late can one student stay at school? (e.g. in the library to study)

 The students leave as soon as their lessons are finished, except for students who are involved in extra curricular activities.

 (Sonia Delaunay) The children can stay at school till 6 p.m. (sometimes, if they are punished)

 (Collège des Tarterêts) We can stay as late as 6.00 p.m, but most of us leave as soon as the lessons are finished.

 May stay till 6 p.m. but nobody wants to stay at school longer than one must!

 Students can stay at school until 1600 , that’s when our library closes. Until than student can study, to chat by Internet, read newspapers and magazines, watch TV.

Do you go on daily excursions? How many during the school year and usually where?

 We go on five 1/2 day excursions a year (near the school). At the end of the year we all go on an one-day excursion outside of Thessaloniki. Also, we sometimes go on educational excursions (to museums, factories etc.)

(Jacques Prevert) There are no daily excursions.

 (Sonia Delaunay) We have a lot of daily excursions (about 30 for all classes) and we usually go to Paris that is not far from our location.

 (Collège des Tarterêts) It depends on what the teachers organize, but yes, we have outings, for one day to Paris, for instance,always educational excursions. We also go to the Jura mountains for one week with our Sports teachers and History and Geography teachers, plus we have visits to England. Naturally, such outings happen once a year at the most for one given group of pupils.

 We have two and two in biology.

 In high school we only have a couple of ½ day excursion during the 4 year. At the end of the school year my whole class goes on a two or three day class-trip outside of our town, usually to an other Hungarian town that has a famous historical background. So we can visit museums, factories there.

 (San Benedetto) For each form: 3-4 in Rome; 1-2 in famous towns, farms, national parks and so on.

  (A.Pacinotti) Yes, we go on daily excursions. Generally twice a year. We usually visit historical cities or museums.

  (Montanari) We have six days for excursions a year. At the end of the year maybe we all go on one-day excursion outside Ravenna.

 4 or 5 times a year, for visits to monuments in Lisbon and other cities or natural reservations, planetarium, etc.

 Two or three each course.

 (DavKat) We have school trips for a day, weekend, a week for learning and pleasure.

 (Gumley House) Yes. We visit factories, museums, lectures, university visits

 Termly. We visit factories, museums, game parks and lakes around the country.

Do you go on overnight excursions?

 Yes, we do. Last year, the environmental group traveled to Finland for 9 days and they also went on an excursion to Pelion (a Greek mountain) for 3 days.

(Jacques Prevert) Yes, last year students went to England and Choir class went to Germany for 8 days.

 (Sonia Delaunay) Last year we went on an overnight excursion to Bruges in Belgium.

 (Collège des Tarterêts) As said above, we did. But some outings are too expensive for our parents, so we can't do everything.

 No, we don’t!

 Yes, last year we had a class-trip to the Matra mountains to a camping place. So we studied the nature and had lots of fun with my class.

 (San Benedetto) Yes, some forms go on overnight excursions.

  (A.Pacinotti) We have gone on overnight excursions for ski.

  (Montanari) Unfortunately, we don't go abroad.

 Yes, last year we went to Germany on an exchange.

 Usually the students of E.S.O. (Compulsory Secondary Education) go to: 1. Nature contact (2-3 days) for pupils in the first course (12-13), 2. Field work (3 days) for pupils in the second course (13-14), 3. Ski (3 days) for pupils in the third course (14-15) and 4. Abroad travel (a week) for pupils in the fourth course (15-16)

 (DavKat) Yes. Last year we went to a seaside town.

 (Gumley House) Yes. Groups go away e.g ski trip to France/ activity week at the seaside/ language exchange visits/ European work experience/ CERN in Geneva.

 Yes. There is always provision for students to go out.
