He tries to pretend everything is all right, his smile a little too wide and his arm around your shoulder a little too tight. You think you might have believed him if you hadn't noticed his new habit of slipping extra Chocolate Frogs into your pocket, or how he now lets you win at Wizard's Chess.
His family is trying harder, too. If once you were smothered in their affection, now you're drowning in it.
You want everything to be the way it was, but every time his mother hugs you tightly and holds on just a little longer than necessary you feel your resistance erode, like sand under soft, relentless ocean waves.
Sometimes, you want to shout that he will never be your brother, that she will never be your mother, and that your home will never be a warm burrow with chickens in the yard.
You are alone.
There are times when you think you hate them all.
But you know that's not true, because you know what hate is. You don't hate them.
The more they love you, the more you realize that you can't love them that warmly, that selflessly. That unconditionally. Not now.
Maybe someday.
But loving hurts, and you're still lost in the undertow.
