Gwendal stared at the parchment for a minute before signing his name and set it on the pile to his left. He looked at the next and set it on the pile to his right for His Majesty to sign when he returned.

Gunter burst into his office and sighed dramatically, clasping his hand together. "Oh, Gwendal, Ulrike is bringing His Majesty here today! Aren't you happy? Isn't the sun shining brighter? Don't you think the birdsong is sweeter?"

Gwendal spared a single, disinterested glance at Gunter and his happy twirling, and then looked back down at his paperwork.

"Gwendal," Gunter said reproachfully, and Gwendal could hear an entire lecture building behind the way Gunter said his name. There was a faint splash from the courtyard, and Gunter gasped, clasping his hands together and whirling for the door. "Oh, no, I'm late! His Majesty is already here!"

Gwendal shook his head and took a calming breath in the silence of Gunter's departure. He signed another document.

He had approximately five minutes of peace. Then there was the sound of footsteps in the corridor, and the door of Gwendal's office flew open again to reveal Yuuri, sopping wet and beaming, clutching something tightly in his fist.

"Gwendal!" Yuuri exclaimed cheerfully as Wolfram and Gunter filled the space behind him.

Gwendal looked up at Yuuri, his expression devoid of the mild curiosity he was feeling. It was highly unusual for Yuuri to search him out so soon after coming from that other world. Unusual to search after him at all.

Yuuri caught his breath. "This is for you," he said, and dropped the thing he had been holding on Gwendal's desk, narrowly avoiding the document Gwendal had just been preparing to look at. Gwendal stared at Yuuri's gift as he ignored the beginning of Wolfram's newest rant. It was a small, plush white kitty with an adorable bow tilted on one ear. He picked it up by its chain and watched it spin slowly.

"That's enough, Wolfram," Gwendal said, and Wolfram quieted, shooting him a surprised look. Yuuri, who'd been cowering a little, looked at Gwendal hopefully.

"You're dripping on my floor," Gwendal said, tearing his eyes away from his gift to look at the young king. Gwendal couldn't help the small twitch of a smile that tugged at the corner of his mouth, and Yuuri beamed before hurrying out of the room to change.

Once His Majesty's entourage had left, Gwendal opened a small drawer to his left, which held his growing collection of terribly cute Earth items, and carefully placed the plush kitty mascot in the center. Then he closed the door and started on his paperwork once more.

Perhaps, Gwendal thought indulgently, the treaties could wait a little longer. He could be kind, and allow His Majesty a day of rest before his work began.
