They play in the rain. It's been drizzling all day, and Yusuke finally got bored with sitting around the compound. He set up a game of soccer, boys versus girls. He asked me to join, but I stayed in my tree. Yusuke, Kuwabara, and Kurama are playing against Keiko, Botan, Shizuru...and Yukina.

She looks wrong in human clothes, a shirt and shorts borrowed from Keiko. It makes her look too much like the child I know she is not.

Yusuke slips in the mud and collides with Kurama, and I hate the look they give each other. It's too much like the way that loudmouthed fool Kuwabara looks at Yukina, that burning want. I've told Kurama he should just claim the boy. He doesn't listen. They just give each other that look.

They're too distracted by one another, and it takes no effort for Yukina to take the ball from Kuwabara.

"May I please have the ball, Kazuma?" I hear her ask.

He laughs stupidly and kicks it to her. Idiot. She's either being very naïve or very clever. It always looks like the former, but I like to think it is the latter. Any sister of mine had best have a brain in her head and the ability to use it. As long as she doesn't end up tainted.

The wind changes, blowing cold drizzle into my sheltered spot, but I ignore it. The breeze carries a hint of her smell, like clean snow.

There are tactical advantages to pretending to be naïve and sweet. Once you prove you're "innocent," people will say certain things around you if they think you won't understand. Or they'll forget you're there. Either way, you can find out some very...interesting things. There's also the fact that it's usually easier to get what you want if you ask nicely. You can get away with a lot if you look like you don't know what you're doing.

With Kazuma, all I have to do is ask for the soccer ball. He laughs and lets me have it, which practically guarantees that we'll win the game. Yusuke and Kurama are too busy not-looking at each other to pay any real attention, anyway.

I hear a snort from Hiei's direction and know that he saw it all, too.

I wish he would play with us for once. He always stays back and watches, mostly watching me. He doesn't want to get too close to anyone, doesn't want to let down his walls. He doesn't want to let me know what he knows.

Lightning flashes, and Kurama says he smells a big storm coming closer. We end the game on a tie, and Yusuke demands a rematch when the weather clears. Kazuma walks me back up to the compound, chattering inanely. I just paste on a smile and let it be. But beneath the wind and the cold rain and the mud drying on my legs, I can sense Hiei watching.

That's okay, too. I'm patient. I can wait for my brother to let me in.

Author's notes, part the second: I really believe that Yukina is far less innocent than she makes herself out to be, so I wanted to show that here. I hope it came through like I intended.
