Welcome to this site, Biographies of Early Scientists in the Philippines. The contents of this site are reproduced from the two volumes entitled Scientists in the Philippines published by the National Science Development Board (NBDB), the forerunner of the current Department of Science and Technology (DOST), in 1975 and 1978 under Minister Melecio S. Magno.

In his foreword for the second volume, Minister Magno wrote:

Essentially, the development of science and technology in any country is the totality of efforts exerted by men and women whose main concerns and orientation had been to insinuate, nay overtly introduce, the assumptions of science and technology into the ways and thinking and habits of an entire people.

More and more markedly, as the pace of our desires for advancement gathered firmness and moderate speed, the labors of our earlier scientists also became channeled into the unceasing exposition of various aspects of the scientific approach to problems, general as well as specific.

Minister Magno's view remains relevant. His desire then was to contribute to the growth of science literature in the country. We are one with him in sustaining the interest in science literature, and we hope that with this online publication, the Science and Technology Information Institute (STII) is contributing its share in keeping alive our people's awareness of the importance of science and technology in the nation's progress.
