Estrada's Restoration of the Marcoses and Cronies After only a year in office, Estrada has ushered the return of US military presence through the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA). He aggressively pushes for 100% foreign ownership of land through constitutional amendment, while Filipino farmers and indigenous peoples are being evicted from their land and ancestral domain. He has given to the family and cronies of the Marcoses the most profitable businesses in the country, while ignoring the clamor of Filipino workers for an increase in living wage. His administration hails Imelda as an Ulirang Ina (Model Mother) and the late dictator as a hero, while victims of warrantless arrests, illegal detention, torture and other human rights abuses in the Marcos years are denied justice to this very day. It is imperative that we give light to the darkness being cast by the anti-poor and corrupt regime of Estrada. We must protest and struggle against the restoration of the Marcoses and their cronies. For as long as we have a clone of the late dictator in Malacañang, we will continue working for peace based on genuine freedom and national democracy.# AMIE DURAL |
