Tips and Hints: |

Things to look out for when buying a 22B: |
SMOKING: Imprezas will do 130,00 miles if they`ve been well looked after. If smoke coming from the exhaust then it could mean worn piston valves or piston rings, which could mean rebuild time. |
CATALYTIC CONVERTER: Generally okay but worth getting the car MOT`d before buying. The second cat should be binned for performance! |
ENGINE MODS: Beware of boost upgrades: the car responds very badly to upping of boost. Put your foot down and watch the engine explode: 3-5k build is inevitable. |
ABUSE: General condition for signs of neglect. An abused car is an unhappy car! |
GREY IMPORTS: Likely that the 22B will be an import unless British spec. Watch out for poor repairs and cars plated to look younger. |
HEATSHEILD: Very prone to cracking. Hear buzzing, when revving? A new heat manifold may be needed: £60. |
WASTEGATE SOLENOID: When oil vapours condense in the breather system they ,cake the solenoid in slime causing the car to loose power at peak boost. |
HEADLAMPS: Not the best, and tend to eat bulbs: there £115 each ouch! |
DIFFERENTIALS: Uneven tyre depth can cause damage to transmission so replace rubber at once! Check for whining from rear diff. Drive slowly on full lock if it isn't smooth then the diff is up for replacement. |
BUSHES: Generally okay, but get sloppy with high miles. |
CLUTCH: Check for clutch judder a new clutch is, oh just £600. |
TYRES: Check tyres are all evenly worn. Dodgy tyre wear could mean poor repairs after crash damage. |
BODYWORK: Look for signs of crash damage, fresh paint and creased inside wings are tell tails. Missing trim clips in boot mean it has had a bump. |
AIRCON: Check aircon pump. If it sounds like a washing machine the pump will need replacing, how does £300 grab ya! for a non-genuine part. |
FUEL: Super unleaded is your best bet on the 22B. If poor quality fuel is used then the ECU stores the octane level in its memory adjusting the car to run low boost. If cars slow: this is it! Get the ECU re-set and fill with super and get driving, HARD! |
FSH: Avoid a car with no service history full stop! |
HPI: HPI checks are essential. Also get the car checked by the AA or a professional. |
