SCOTTISH NATIONAL STANDARD BEARER: Peter Dow

Scottish Green Failings

Well done to those 3 green M.S.P.s who did not attend the Queen's address to parliament - their place in the Scottish Republican Roll of Honour is recorded.

However, that still leaves a majority of 4 out of the 7 greens who did attend and suck up to the Queen.

(We must assume then that the majority of Green MSPs are loyal to the Queen even when environmental protesters - such as Greenpeace - end up in Her Majesty's Prisons!)

So, over all, I'm afraid the mark for the Scottish Green Party is a borderline fail.
I'd say to the greens - "Sorry, greens, but do keep trying. Perhaps if you got yourself a better parliamentary leader than that tactically inept and royalist sympathiser Robin Harper M.S.P then you'd actually deliver something for the people of Scotland?"

I'd nominate Mark Ballard M.S.P. to lead the Scottish Greens. For some reason, the greens seem a bit reluctant to name their own leaders. I wonder why? Admittedly, the greens' "no leadership" muddle over the Queen's address to parliament was better than the bad leadership of the Labour, Lib Dem, Conservative and SNP leaders. However, Sheridan's good leadership of the socialist boycott was far better than the greens' "no leadership". With a smaller force of 6 M.S.P.s, Sheridan did more for the republican cause than the poorly led 7 green M.S.P.s. That is the value of leadership.

Does the Scottish Green Party have proud republican policies? Well, I couldn't see anything indicating that on the Scottish Green Party web site (I looked in June 2003). I'm afraid I couldn't believe their warm words about their "principles of radical democracy and egalitarianism". The Scottish Green Party is just not credible while a majority of their M.S.P.s seem comfortable entertaining Queen Elizabeth in parliament. Is that Queen a defender of radical democracy and egalitarianism? I DON'T THINK SO!
