Many Paths To God?

How often I hear that the world's religions are all different paths to the same God, as if people start at a point along the rim of a wheel, and can choose any spoke to take them to the center.

In a sense, this saying is true: All human religion basically says the same thing. Each of us, through self-effort, can earn our right to be with God. Although the forms of expression are endless, all world religions can be distilled to this core concept. With one exception: the grace offered by Jesus Christ.

Instead of saying there are many paths to the same God, it would be more accurate to say there is a road going east and west, the two directions which never meet. In one direction is the route to God by which a person earns access to God through works, and in the other direction is the route to God. The two directions are mutually exclusive, and each person must choose one direction and stick to it.
