Friday Night is Music Night

Review One: Rosemary

Brigadoon Duet:

Not being very well acquainted with the musical (seen it once on the TV) it is hard to pass judgement on the role Scott was to portray here. It was a Duet between Tommy and Fiona before Tommy departs, most likely never to see her and Brigadoon again. Scott had to do an American accent for this song, and in the speaking bit between the characters he did a very good job in my opinion. In my total honesty here I must confess I did not like the song, not Scott’s fault at all I hasten to add! It is not a song I would have started the show with either. Overall Scott did a good job (naturally I would say that you most likely say), the highlight being the speaking bit because I have never heard Scott speak. Yes I know he does not speak with an American accent but this is the closest I have got.

Ae Fond Kiss – Robert Burns:

When first listening to this I did not warm to the song, but now confess that it is my second favourite song of the show. Scott was very good in rolling his Rs and things to fit the Scottish voice needed, but as a former member of the Scottish Opera this faultless performance was to be expected! I feel Scott really enjoyed singing this song himself, little things like that do come across in performances. This same feeling did not come across during the Brigadoon duet, having said this Scott will read this and might disagree here! The song is definitely recommended to put on an album WHEN (not if) Scott gets the opportunity to record one. The words were so beautiful I shall put them here for you all to see, unfortunately have not found a midi of the tune…

Ae fond kiss, and then we sever!
Ae fareweel, and then forever!
Deep in heart-wrung tears I'll pledge thee,
Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee.
Who shall say that fortune grieves him
While the star of hope she leaves him?
Me, nae cheerfu' twinkle lights me,
Dark despair around benights me.

I'll ne'er blame my partial fancy,
Naething could resist my Nancy;
But to see her was to love her,
Love but her, and love forever.
Had we never loved sae kindly,
Had we never loved sae blindly,
Never met -- or never parted,
We had ne'er been broken-hearted.

Fare thee weel, thou first and fairest!
Fare thee weel, thou best and dearest!
Thine be ilka joy and treasure,
Peace, enjoyment, love, and pleasure!
Ae fond kiss, and then we sever!
Ae fareweel, alas, forever!
Deep in heart-wrung tears I'll pledge thee,
Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee.

Bring Him Home – Les Miserables: (Midi playing now)

This song was a lovely surprise! Those of you that visit the Scott Davies Yahoo group will know we often bring up the Role of Valjean as a must in Scott’s career, some of us were brave enough even to tell Scott so. This had to have been a song Scott was able to request to sing, there does not seem to be a plan with the show but this song was very recent compared to all the others selected. The fact it was pure coincidence is not enough for the group to accept!

A sparkling performance of the song just to prove that Scott is the man for this role!

My Kind of Girl – 1960 Eurovision Song Contest Winner for the UK:

She walks, like an angel walks,
she talks like an angel talks!
And her hair has a kind of curl
to my mind, she's my kind of girl!

She's wise, like an angel's wise,
with eyes like an angel's eyes!
And a smile like a kind of pearl
to my mind, she's my kind of girl!

Pretty little face
that face just knocks me off of my feet!
Pretty little feet
she's really sweet enough to eat!

She looks, like an angel looks,
she cooks like an angel cooks!
And my mind's in a kind of whirl
to my mind, she's my kind of girl!

Pretty little face
that face just knocks me off of my feet!
Pretty little feet
she's really sweet enough to eat!

She looks, like an angel looks,
she cooks like an angel cooks!
And my mind's in a kind of whirl
to my mind, she's my kind of girl!

And my heart's kind of full of joy
because she told me
I'm her kind of boy!

Despite the scary mention of Eurovision this song is plain clean fun! Just to see Scott perform this song would have been great! Alas hearing it will have to suffice… Proves that Scott can sing songs without singing at full operatic belt and still sound wonderful. It is not a deep emotional song so it is best not to ruin the moment and analyse it deeply.

I’ve Never Been In Love Before/ I’ll Know – Guys and Dolls:

Having been a fan of this musical before phantom I know these two songs very well and have heard several versions, the original Broadway cast and Frank Sinatra film. This was the first time I heard a more operatic take on the songs and to be honest it works very well! The arrangement of the music suited it too. The song showed off Scott’s operatic talent, “But this is wine, its all to strange and strong” being a great sung line in the song (have I been listening to it too much?!).

This song was a great finish to the show and not one I would have chosen for Scott at first. Another must add role to his future album, Sky Masterson!
