Greyfriar's Kirk & The Black Mausoleum

The story of Greyfriar's Bobby is commonly known especially with a Disney production of the same name, but another story which has recently emerged from the same graveyard is that of poltergeist activity.

The Black Mausoleum is situated in the far left corner of Greyfriar's Kirk Graveyard, away from the rosy stories of obidient dogs the poltergeist of a certain Bloody McKenzie is the new attraction. The poltergeist activites were brought to light several years ago, after a homeless man had a frightening experience of being scratched and attacked by an unknown force within the crypt he had chosen to sleep in.

Since the first reports, the Mausoleum has been locked and only opened at night for the Blackhart Tours to take place. Blackhart have a daily log of experiences within the crypts, some of which are terrifying. Many vistors experience cold spots and great feelings of extreme uncomfort not to mention the unbelieveable number of visitors who have been scratched or have actually passed out on the tours.

The goings on in Greyfriar's are close to my own heart, as I worked in a shop in Greyfriar's Place which backed onto the graveyard. We had numerous unexplained occurences within the shop itself, and believe it may have been due to the crypt situated at the back of the shop. When the shop was renovated, two doors were discovered at the back of the shop...one of which was underground and directly below the crypt itself !

There was one particular occasion when a manageress was alone in the shop, and one lone display rack started to shake violently without any explanation. All members of staff who had spent time alone in the shop had had similar experiences of feeling uncomfortable, hearing footsteps and having music CD's stopping and electronic equipment failing on a regular basis.

We also have a photograph taken in the shop before the renovation which shows an unexplainable mass moving across the room, you will find this in our Picture Archives
