Penicuik House, Clerk Estate

Penicuik House was destroyed in a fire in the early 1900's, but the Clerk family still reside in the reonvated stables beside the house shell. The estate itself consists of three ponds ; Top Pond, Middle Pond and the Bottom Pond. It has been said that the Middle Pond is hidden in the estate, and only a select few known the whereabouts.

What is believed to be the Middle Pond, is also the site of a strange tunnel. It is believed that on the shortest day in November at 11am the sun shines through this short tunnel and lights it completely up. In the middle of the tunnel, is an alcove which seats around four people. The alcove contains holders for two candles and has strange hand carved inscriptions in the walls. It has been said that a distant member of the Clerk family may have been linked with the occult, but no evidence has been found to suggest this.

Penicuik House is most famously haunted by a White Lady, said to be that of the last Lady Clerk to reside in the house itself. Several sightings have been reported, some of which refer to the lady as wearing a feather in her hat.
