Lemuel Reid
South Carolina State Troops
Lt Lem Reid was born about 1816. He served first Jun 1862 - Jan 1863 in
5th South Carolina Reserves, Company H
as a 1st Sergeant and then Aug 1863 - Feb 1864 in
1st State Troops, Company I
His wife was Sophia W. (White). He was of Abbeville District and according to
the orginal photo of of Lt. Reid his a confederate winter jacket, he was known
as "Uncle Lem" Reid. He died 17 May 1867 and is buried at Upper Long Canes
Cemetary, Abbeville. His descendants think Lemuel died because of illness from
his Confederate service and because he lost two sons, Sgt John Reid and Private
Samuel Reid, both in the First SC Regiment of Rifles (Orr's). Samuel was killed
at Gaines Mill and John was killed in 1864.
