4. How long have you been visiting/posting to Scribbly?
Answer: 'bout 6 months
5. How did you find Scribbly?
Answer: When I got online I headed straight for ABC online.
6. What got you interested in Nature?
Answer: Studying agriculture at uni. really brought out a latent tendancy: I realised Australian ag. as a whole produces more than it can sell profitably on world markets, flogs the crap out of the land doing it, and I was supposed to help out farmers who do this because they feel they are achieving something of value to the world.
7. What area or ecosystem do you enjoy visiting most?
Answer: Ones under threat from development and patrolled by huge guard dogs. (Not fair to expect me to decide on any other basis.)
8. Favourite animal. (a.one domestic and b. one wild :))
Answer: a. dog-and-man-impaling moo cows.
b. anything with attitude. eg: white browed scrubwren. But not 'urban increasers' training people to feed them eg: brushtail possums, currawongs.
9 I think that I shall never see a poem as lovely as a tree.
Is this statement true or false (IYHO)?

Answer: Hoo...boy... I have to be in a pretty good mood for a poem to do a lot for me.
Trees are highly contextual things - growing themselves in their natural habitat or like camphor laurel in N. NSW. Can't seem to shake that outlook. But rusty gums (Angophora costata) Grey gums, Giant Water Gums (Syzigium francisii), Bauhinnia woodland, Bendee scrub, .....on and on, can make me dreamy when poetry can't touch me.

8 Favourite animal. (one domestic and one wild :))

Subject: re: Who are we? post id: 4061
1) What name do you post under?

Almost always my registered handle-I don't see the benefit of having many aliases.

2) Where do you come from?

Perth, WA.

3) Age (approx. if you wish :))

22 Years

4) How long have you been visiting/posting to Scribbly?

A few months, a little after Quarrion got me interested in birds again (of the avian variety of course!)

5) How did you find Scribbly?

Through the SSSF link at the top.

6) What got you interested in Nature?

Usually through a keen sense of observation of various parts of nature, and then wondering why nature behaves that way. A little similar to the way Richard Feyman seemed to look at nature, as something of great beauty but that could be figured out through rigorous thought.

7) What area or ecosystem do you enjoy visiting most?

Usually the beach and ocean, although my experience of geology in high school left me with a deep admiration for rock landscapes. Forests are wonderful to see as well.

8) Favourite animal. (one domestic and one wild :))

Domestic-aquarium fish and parrots. Wild-generally birds (especially the beautifully coloured species), particularly the more intelligent parrots and galahs. I also admire ravens for their intelligence, although their cowardice in the face of willie-wagtails is amusing to watch. :)

9) I think that I shall never see a poem as lovely as a tree.
Is this statement true or false (IYHO)?

False. Nature at all levels seems to have an incredibly rich structure that is vastly greater and pleasing to the intellect than even the best poetry could ever be.

6 What got you interested in Nature?

I come from there!:) Never saw “lawns” or “parks” in my childhood, only fields and
forests. No potato chips and mars bars, but wild sorrel, acorns, hazelnuts, berries, flowers from which you could suck the sweet nectar. I gave daisies a hard time making them into chains and ripping their petals off to find out if “he loves me”. Snow tastes beautiful, fallen leafes (sp) make soft, sweet smelling beds. Yes...the smells....ahhh the smells.. snowbells, lilacs, violets, dried apple skins, roasted chestnuts, forest floors...

semi-domesticated 6-ft-plenty-Labrador;-) and, had we more than *one* wild animal, it would be dolphins and cormorants for me, because they come close enough to my beaches for me to watch them - but having the choice of only *one* I’ll cheaply plagiarise and say, p'rhaps predictably: “Man”;-)

9 I think that I shall never see a poem as lovely as a tree.
Is this statement true or false (IYHO)?

My subjective truth: “False” (as false as is -for some- 'subjective truth';-))!

The subtropical rainforests in the Hinterlands to the north and south of brisbane are beautiful... I love the cool of the mountain rainforests. Spooky, and enthralling... I get butterflies in my stomach just driving through it. I also love the southern Mountain Ranges as well... the ghost gum forests in NSW are spectacular. The outback... just vast expanses of land... Frankly, I love this country.

God I hate that poem. A tree isn't a poem... a poem is the result of rules and order and a regimented mind. A tree is raw passion and beauty. It exists simply to be. They are more than we can ever hope to be, and yet bend to our will... they are... special.

b) Koala. I reckon i'd have liked to be adapted to sitting around in trees all day getting stoned.

9 I think that I shall never see a poem as lovely as a tree.
Is this statement true or false (IYHO)?

Answer: True. Although a poem can invoke deep thoughts and feelings, due to the inherent definitiveness of language it tends to be rather a directed, predictable response. Contemplating a tree can take you ANYWHERE.

Dear Boxhead,
Since you asked.....
re dog-and-man-impaling moo cows

You maybe thought cows docile? Submissive?
Those of us who know and love them respect that cows don't take no B.crap.

One of the older, more mellow cows aloofly acknowledges my approach with a horn inclined in my general direction in an understated offer of swift disembowelment, and a cold gleam in her eye - then ignoring me as I timidly sidle up and give her a cuddle. She sometimes sells out on her principles and actually enjoys a vigorous rubbing along her throat.

After she calves, a cow experiences a powerful flush of testosterone and paranoidogen. There could one day be a cure for those of us who suffer poor body image - Witness the impressive and intimidating display as a stubby forefoot reaches forward, then flicks dust over her back, the glare of her eyes bulging from her endearingly spotted face lowered to impaling level with nostrils issuing snorts of flame... and that's one without horns. Many's the overconfident canine has perished ignonimously with a throttled, despairing yelp, imbedded in the ground by that fearsome poley head....

A cow's gotta do what a cow's gotta do...

Sorry, always wanted to share that :-)

I'VE ADDED UP ALL THE REPLIES AND WITHOUT A DOUBT THE TREES HAVE IT - THEY WIN - WHAT CAN BE NICER, MORE BEAUTIFUL, MORE ROMANTIC, AND WHAT CAN BE MORE OSGAMIC THAN HUGGING A TREE EACH DAY. STEP BACK AND LOOK AT THEIR BEAUTY, THEY EXUDE ALL THE PRIMAEVAL (THE "A" AND "E" SHOULD HAVE A DIPTHONG IF WE WANT TO SPELL PROPER ENGLISH, BUT I DON'T KNOW HOW TO DO THIS IN MICROSOFT) APPEAL THAT IS ENGRAINED IN EACH OF US.

TREES ARE LIVING LEGENDS. MOST OF THE OLD PADDOCK TREES THAT ARE STILL EXTANT REMAIN EVEN AFTER THE LAND CLEARING THAT OCCURRED BACK IN THE DAYS OF THE CHINESE RINGBARKING GANGS WHO WERE EMPLOYED BY THE SETTLERS TO CLEAR THE COUNTRY AND "DEVELOP" THEIR LAND.

UNFORTUNATELY THIS PRACTICE IS STILL GOING ON. NOT SO MUCH THE BLATANT CLEARING, BUT IT IS OCCURRING VIA STEALTHY MEANS SUCH AS STUBBLE BURNING AND THE ODD TREE OR TWO BEING KNOCKED DOWN TO "SQUARE OFF A PADDOCK".

Hi Sheepman:)

Just found the "last part" to your last question:)

"Trees"
by
Joyce Kilmer. 1886-1918

I THINK that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the sweet earth's flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

We love our own back yard, but also visit other places as much as we can.
In the International Year of the Oceans we went to the coast for two whole days by bus ... and the local air line company gave 18 of us a free flight along the same route that we had travelled by bus, flying along the coast, around the light house and past the point where our town's waste goes into the sea.
Last December, after almost two years studying water, a small group of us went up and stayed on a local farm near the Barossa Reservoir for a weekend. We don't have dams where we are, so the chance to see the farm's dam, and the Barossa Ressie and the beautiful Whispering Wall was a great "outing". Again, local industries supported us.
Our current big project is the study of an area of bush and pine plantation destroyed in a bushfire 18 months ago.

I think poetry enables you to conjure images and feelings in your head, and as I've been lucky to see many beautiful trees perhaps poetry enables me to see trees as well as fish, birds, the sky, mountains, animals...... so I guess in answer to the question, false (IMHO)!

hi alecos.
a 72 year old tree surgeon?
well done sir!

>trees, rock so long as they are natives.

now, beryl, i take exception to this.
trees rock.fullstop.
sure i like natives..i am pretty passionate about native understorey plants that sometimes are neglected..

but.. walnuts, almonds, apples, plums, apricots, chestnuts, lemons, oranges, figs BLACK CHERRIES!
i am not prepared to give them up.

..not to mention.. oaks and rowans and spruces and weeping elms!
i really like them too.
i want all my trees.

2 Where do you come from?
In 1999 moved from western suburbs of Sydney to a 8 acre rural block in Howard Springs just outside Darwin.

3 Age (approx. if you wish :))
mid 30's

4 How long have you been visiting/posting to Scribbly?
12 months or so? I lurk a lot, but only contribute occassionally.

5 How did you find Scribbly?
Work has direct link to ABC site for news and stuff. Over-stimulated by my ever so exciting job, I was relaxing a little by exploring the ABC site and stumbled across SSF, and from there to Scribbly.

6 What got you interested in Nature?
Married a nature freak who's a mad keen fisherman. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em!

7 What area or ecosystem do you enjoy visiting most?
I don't know about 'enjoy', but the ecosystemd I get to visit most are creeks, rivers, dams and anywhere else that you catch fish. I like watching the birds flitting about in the mangroves, and the water dragons sunning themselves on the rocks. Not too keen on the crocs though.

8 Favourite animal. (one domestic and one wild :))
Domestic has to be my beautiful puppy dogs. I love the way they look up to me with blind adoration. Why can't I train my husband to do that?
For wild animals, I like watching the wallabies that visit the back of our block.

9 I think that I shall never see a poem as lovely as a tree.
Is this statement true or false (IYHO)?

I'm not a poetry person, so I guess that means I vote for the tree.

Hi G-wiz.
I've been here off and on, but mainly just lurking. For some reason, reading the forum during work hours doesn't seem as much like bludging as contrbuting does. By the way, do you think we have enough Darwin-ites here and on SSSF for a Xmas meet up? I'm getting jealous looking at the wonderful plans the guys elsewhere are making.

Hey beclf
Any training tips would be very welcome. I've been trying for about 14 years now, and his mother tried for nearly 30 years before that. We reckon he's a hopeless case!

7 What area or ecosystem do you enjoy visiting most?
Answer: Rainforest, Beach and Urban Jungle but the first two win hands down over the last.

Answer: Seriously I don’t know how to answer this as it’s not something I’ve really pondered and perhaps needs more time spent on it than I wish to bestow at the moment, There are lovely poems and there are lovely trees so I’ll say pass for now
