Chapter 1
"A Vision from the Past? A Familiar Stranger Makes the Scene."
The two ravens sat quietly upon the open window sill, having
watched the five girls in the room study diligently at their
schoolwork. That was, at least, the intention the five girls had.
Only one really managed to pull it off as studying was something
that she often did in her own quiet time. Ami enjoyed the chance
to learn of new things, and to broaden her knowledge; the others
failed to fully understand it.
Makoto, for all her attempts at studying, was lost in a drifting
thought of a new transfer student in her first class, a tall,
athletic boy with lively green eyes and bright red hair who,
contrary to her initial statement, looked absolutely nothing like
her
old boyfriend.
Rei and Usagi spent their study time arguing fiercely over what
was, in essence, nothing at all. It was their constant banter that
in it's off beat way, let each other know that they still cared
about
their friend. A truth they'd never admit to, but was obvious to
those that had grown to known them best.
The last of the room's occupants, the bubbly blue-eyed blonde
known as Minako was resting the side of her head gingerly upon the
wooden table, looking back at the two familiar birds in the
window.
One raven cocked it's head slightly to match Minako's position,
and stared at her in a questioning glance, as if to ask if there
were
something different about the world from that angle.
The comical movement caught Rei's attention, and she laughed
silently to herself as she walked over to the birds. "Phobos,
stop that you strange raven." She tossed the two a few remaining
bits of their earlier snack, and closed the window as the two
birds
took flight, their beaks firmly grasping their precious prizes.
"How can you tell them apart?" asked Minako. "They look
exactly the same."
"Well Phobos has black feathers..."
four pairs of eyes gave Rei a questioning look, and she simply
smiled at her small joke. Those two are like family," she
answered.
"I just know."
"Can't see how," Minako admitted.
The discussion was interrupted by a sudden roar of thunder
and the distinctive rattle of millions of water droplets crashing
to the ground.
Makoto turned towards the door, listening to the sounds outside.
"Wow, listen to it rain, it came out of nowhere."
Ami turned on the small radio that sat in the room, adjusting
the tuner through static caused by the sudden storm.
"...Rain, rain, rain," droned the dry voice of the station's
DJ. "It just seemed to come out of nowhere, the national weather
forecast for today? Sunny, with partial clouds in the early
evening.
Looks like they need to get away from that overpriced equipment
and stick their heads outside from time to time."
"What a rude person," Rei muttered as she sat back down. "No
one's good enough for him I bet."
"Hold on a moment everyone," the DJ's voice interrupted.
"It's seems we've gotten a call on our Tokyo Townwatch line.
Apparently the Tenth Street Shopping Complex is being robbed by-"
The girls held their breaths as the DJ's voice fell silent for
a moment. "by what appears to be the famous hero, Sailor V."
"Wha?!"
The five surprised voices rang out in unison as all the girls
turned their attention to the slightly pale Minako. "Sailor V
would
never do such a thing!" Minako protested. "It's just not her."
Her friends exchanged embarrassed glances, and Usagi leaned
over to Minako's ear. "Minako-chan, you're Sailor V."
Minako stood up with a jolt, startling the others and pitching
Usagi off balance and toppling to the floor. She slammed her hands
on the table, her eyes filled with determination. "How dare
someone
ruin the name of a beautiful idol like me. Lets go!"
-----
The Sailor Senshi, each still uncertain what exactly to make of
the situation, surrounded the entrance to a jewelry store in the
Tenth Street Shopping complex. Standing in a semi-circle,
they looked back and forth at one another.
"Why are we just standing here in the rain!" Venus protested,
"Let's go get this phony!"
A shrill whistle ceased their dash towards the door, and they
all turned about.
She stood before them in white, red, and blue, with large red
bows adorning the front and back of her outfit. Elbow-length
white gloves, with orange trim, and a large red mask completed
the clothes that were known everywhere as the trademark fashion
of Sailor V.
Whoever stood before them, the resemblance was beyond
remarkable. The color of their hair, the way it fell from the
large
red hair bow that held it tightly back, the shining blue of their
eyes.
"A little slow today, aren't we guys?"
Even the voice was identical, and the Sailor Senshi couldn't
help finding themselves looking between her and Sailor Venus in
awe.
"Sailor V?" Moon asked with uncertainty.
"That would be me," she replied. "The one and only Sailor V, V
is for Victory!"
Twin crescent moons glowed for an instant at her fingertip
as she charged her power. "Crescent beam!"
The golden beam of energy sent the Senshi scattering, and fueled
Venus's anger even more. She lunged at her doppelganger who leapt
over her nimbly. "You should know better than to try that on
yourself Sailor Venus," Sailor V taunted. "You'll only wind up
embarrassing us."
"You aren't me!" yelled Venus angrily.
"You're right," V agreed. "I'm Sailor V, the person you were,
the idol you gave up being. Such a poor choice. You ended my
existence, so now I'm going have yours. Sailor V Kick!"
Sailor V's heel collided with Venus's shoulder, forcing her back
down onto the ground painfully. The dark double turned to smile
triumphantly at the other Senshi, holding out her hand which
clutched
a large necklace of black pearls. "The owner just left these
laying
around, and I know they'd look better on me than on his display,
don't you think? Besides, a new start isn't free. But enough of
that, it's been fun guys, see you around, say hi to Artemis for
me!"
The sirens blared as the two police cars screeched to a halt
before the shopping center. Four uniformed officers made a rapid
exit from their vehicles, and headed quickly inside. Some of them
had wanted to leave sooner, but the strange report, which their
superior had deemed as 'just another crank call,' had taken a
backseat to another smaller matter nearby.
Rushing to the scene, they made it just in time to see one
unidentifiable blonde get away, leaving five startling figures
behind.
"F-freeze!" shouted one of the officers, pulling his gun out
nervously.
"Sorry guys," Sailor Mars said with a smile, "Can't stay and
chat."
The Senshi vanished in the same direction as the other had gone,
leaving the four officers dumbfounded. The officer who'd drew his
weapon just stared at his gun for a second before putting it away,
fumbling a bit as he did so. "You realize," the told the others,
"that no one is going to believe this."
-----
"She knew my name?"
"Artemis, do you have any idea what's going on?"
The white cat turned to the other feline and shook his head.
"Not a clue Luna, I don't have any idea. Minako-chan is the only
Sailor V, so this person is some sort of fake."
"She looked just like me," Minako whispered, more to herself
than the others. "She sounded like me, had my powers, even knew my
moves."
"It's okay Minako-chan," Ami said reassuringly. "We'll find a
way to stop this imposter."
"Thank you Ami-chan." Minako's smile failed to cover anything,
and the others could all tell just how much the situation was
disturbing her.
The rain died, and the five girls, now dry, split up and made
their ways back home. Minako walked slower than usual, her feet
dragging heavily as she plodded along in an uncomfortable
silence. Artemis followed beside her, worry in his eyes. "What's
wrong Minako?"
"Artemis, why did I give up being Sailor V? Being an idol is
everything I've wanted, and it would be so easy to fulfill my
dreams
as Sailor V."
"Being an idol is Minako Aino's dream, not Sailor V's. Would
it be the same if people were cheering Sailor V, as it would
Minako?"
The blonde didn't reply as she continued to walk on, her mind
still full of thoughts.
"Don't let this imposter get to you Minako. No matter what,
you were, and are the one and only Sailor V, soldier of love and
justice. It doesn't matter what costume you wear, and what you
call
yourself, you are you, no one can ever destroy that."
Minako looked down at the white cat, smiling at his genuine
concern for her. Opening her arms, Artemis jumped into her grasp,
and she held him tightly. "Thank you Artemis. You wouldn't happen
to have a plan along with those words of confidence would you?"
"Actually," the cat said with a glimmer of pride in his eyes,
"I do. But first thing's first, you need a good night's sleep."
A few cool drops of water splattered on the two companions
as the clouds began to loose another session of rain down upon
them.
Minako held her book bag above her head, attempting to shield the
two
of them as she ran the short distance back to her house.
