SCULLY'S APARTMENT
6:30 AM
MARCH 23, 2000
"Ohshitohshitohshit! Where IS it??"
Dana Scully searched her apartment frantically. She rummaged through
drawers, clothes, papers, etc, searching for her lost necklace.
"Come on, Dana, *think*!"
She racked her brain, desperately trying to remember if, when, and *where*
she had taken her beloved cross off. She was failing miserably.
BASEMENT OFFICE
8:30 AM
Mulder's head shot up when his tardy partner finally arrived. He opened his
mouth, fully intending to tease her, but bit his tongue when he saw the
anguished look on her face. OK, it was more disgust than anguish, but Mulder
decided that all remarks that could possibly piss her off even more should
be saved for when she was happy.
God save us all from angry-Scullies, Mulder thought with a chuckle.
"Hey Scully," he said, giving her his best 'it'll-be-alright-whatever-it-is' smile.
Scully sighed
"Hi. . .Mulder, you haven't seen my necklace around have you?"
He thought about it for a minute.
AH, I *knew* there was something different about her today.
"No, I'm afraid I haven't, Scully."
"Oh."
Nothing more was said.

Scully was gone as soon as the hour hand hit 12. Mulder stayed behind to
finish up some paperwork. Lunch could wait.
He had told Scully to go home for the day, which she was grateful for. In 2
and a half hours, she had managed to spill coffee all over her "desk", fall
down twice, and knock Mulder in the head with a filing cabinet drawer.
It was around 7 PM, when Mulder was leaving, that he noticed that Scully had
left her purse in the office.
"I'd better take it to her," he concluded with a smile.
As he picked up Scully's purse, a small glimmer of light caught his eye from
under her "desk". He knelt down and cleared the papers away. There,
underneath Scully's paperwork from their last X-File, laid her necklace.
"Oh wow. It was here all along. Well, she'll be happy to have it back." Mulder turned to leave, and smacked right into Scully. "Whoah. Hey, Scully. What're you doing here?"
"I was, um, I. . .forgot my purse," she said, diverting her eyes from his to
search the office.
"Yeah, I know. I was just heading over to give it to you."
He handed it to her, still concealing the necklace in his hand.
"Well thanks, Mulder. I'll see you tomorrow, " Scully replied as she was
heading out the door.
"Scully! Wait!"
He waited for her to turn around before stepping closer to her. He held the
necklace out to her. The smile he got in return was all he needed.
"Mulder, you. . .I. . .how. . ."
"It was under your desk. The clasp is broken. It must've fallen off at work
yesterday."
Mulder sighed, content with her beautiful smile, and started to leave. It
was then that a very happy Scully did something neither of them expected.
She threw her arms around Mulder's neck and kissed him right on the lips.
Now, this wasn't a passionate 'I love you' kiss. This was a kiss out of
gratification. A quick peck that still somehow managed to melt Mulder.
"Oh, Mulder! I love you!! Thank you *so* much!!"
Oh, great, as if you haven't weakened me enough with that kiss, Scully!
Mulder couldn't even get a word out before she disappeared through the door.
Not that he knew what to say anyway. He was too dumbfounded. In a matter of
30 seconds, his relatively reserved partner and A) kissed him, and B) told
him she loved him, a secret he's gone to great pains to keep from her for
the past 7 years. This was all happening too fast for him.
MULDER'S APARTMENT
12:00 AM
MARCH 24, 2000
Mulder laid wide awake on his leather couch. How could he *possibly* be
expected to sleep at a time like this?
Did she really mean it? She *was* really happy, she may have just said it
out of sheer joy.
Mulder's gaze never left the ceiling as he pondered his partner's words.
Does she know that I feel the same way? How could she? The last time I told
her I love her, she dismissed it as being related to the medicine I was on.
Should I tell her now? Can I? How?
Mulder's mind was reeling with questions. He had to know if she meant what
she said. He glanced over at the clock.
1 IS. Damn, she'll be asleep. But this can't wait!
SCULLY'S APARTMENT
2 AM
MARCH 24
Before he knew it, he was parked outside her apartment building. He looked
up to her window. The lights were off, but there was a blur glow in her
living room window.
She wouldn't be awake, would she?
She wasn't.
When he entered, he found her sleeping peacefully on her couch. The light
from the TV she had left on was casting light blue shadows over her.
God, she's beautiful.
Mulder smiled down at her. He sat down on the edge of her couch gently,
trying his best not to wake her.
She's so peaceful. I don't want to wake her. But I have to do this now, or
I'll lose my nerve.
He leaned over slowly and kissed her forehead. she stirred, mumbling
something, but didn't wake up. Mulder smiled at her and leaned down again,
this time kissing each of her closed eyelids. That got her attention. As
soon as Mulder pulled back, her eyes flew open. There, merely inches away
from her, was Mulder, smiling sweetly at her.
"M-Mulder?" Scully stuttered, rubbing her eyes to make sure she wasn't
dreaming.
"Hey Scully."
"Mulder. . .what *are* you doing here this late?!"
"I. . ." he paused, his eyes widening as he looked her over, "Oh my, Scully,
you're beautiful."
"Mulder! It's 2 am! What. . .I. . .thank you, Mulder."
"I'm sorry, Scully, but I had to ask you a question."
"What's so important that it couldn't wait until tomorrow??"
"Us."
"Us? Mulder, what 'us'? I wasn't aware that there *was* and 'us'."
Ouch, Scully, ouch.
"Well. . .there's not. . .but, um, I. . ."
"What is it, Mulder?"
He paused for a minute. He'd been so anxious to get to her that he'd
completely forgotten to think about what he was going to say.
Just tell her the truth, Mulder. She deserves at least that much.
"OK, Scully, the reason I'm here is that I was wondering if. . ."
Come *on*, Mulder! Just *tell* her!!
Scully could tell that something was troubling Mulder. Although she didn't
know *what*, all she wanted to do was comfort him. She grabbed hold of his
hands and pulled them into her lap, lacing their fingers together. The
contact help settle Mulder's nerves a little as he continued.
"I was. . .wondering if you. . .meant it."
"Meant what, Mulder?"
"What you said. Today, in the office. When I found your necklace. . ."
Scully thought for a minute, unable to remember what she had said. The look
on her face was all Mulder needed.
Oh God, she doesn't remember. She didn't mean it. Shitshitshit.
"Mulder?"
Her voice brought him back to earth.
Well, now you've done it, Mulder. You went and opened your big mouth. Now
you *have* to tell her. Smart move.
Taking a deep breath, he continued.
"Today, when I gave you back your necklace. . ."
And then it hit her.
((Oh NO, he heard it! I didn't mean to say it out loud!! Good job, Dana.))
". . .well, you said that you loved me, and at the time I thought you may
have meant it. . ."
"Mulder. . ."
". . .but now I realize that you were just happy. I. . .God, Scully. . ."
"Mulder!"
"I'm really sorry for bringing it up, not to mention waking you up at 2 am,
but i. . ."
"MULDER!"
His head shot up, and he realized that he had been babbling to his shoes.
"Huh?"
Scully smiled, bringing his hands to her mouth, kissing them. She pulled his
closer and wrapped her arms around him.
"I *did* mean it," she whispered into his ear.
Her breath on his neck sent chills down his spine. He smiled into her hair
and laid his head on her shoulder, his arms encircling her waist.
Scully pulled back enough to look him in the eyes. She placed both hands on
his face and whispered, "I love you, Fox Mulder. Don't' you ever doubt that.
You are my partner, my best friend, my soul mate. . .my life. I love you
with all my heart and all my soul, and I never want you to forget that."
Once again, Mulder was dumbfounded. He was struck beyond words. But Scully
saved him. . .before he had a chance to get so much as a word out, she
leaned forward, claiming his mouth with her own.
When they finally regained some awareness of the world around them, Mulder
and Scully found themselves entangled with each other, lying on the couch.
Scully laid her head on Mulder's chest just above his heart. She smiled at
the steady rhythm of his heart beat.
"Scully. . ." Mulder choked out.
"I know, Mulder, I know."
He leaned down to kiss her forehead, then whispered into her ear, "I love
you, Dana Katherine Scully."
He kissed her forehead again as she pulled him closer.
