Coldplay with Joseph Arthur, May 24th--Boston Avalon

I had been waiting months to see Coldplay.  I had been so disappointed when they cancelled their first show back in February, but I was so psyched to get another chance!  it almost didn't happen, tho.  The day tickets went onsale, I called only to find out they were sold out!  In 2 minutes!?  I didn't think that was right, so I called and it turned out there had been a pre-sale for the folks who had tickets to the Feb. show, of which I was one.  but I never received the letter about the pre-sale, so I called and explained everything, and the nice people at NextTicketing got me 2 tickets.  I was so relieved.  So we went to the Avalon, which is a lovely place, really.  We took spots on the stairs that separate the dance floor from the bar area, which meant we could see over most everyone's heads, which was key.  Unfortunately, we were right in front of the speaker wall, so that was a bit, um, loud.  But it was worth it.  Joseph Arthur came on, and the lead singer, who seemed to be going for a look between Richard Ashcroft and Noel Gallagher, had no personality.  I didn't care for the band too much, but I'm sure thay have loyal fans, so i won't complain about them too much.  The bass player was cute, tho.

But onto Coldplay. The nice thing was the crowd was so looking forward to seeing them, and the atmosphere was really great.  The show was recorded by WBCN, as DJ Melissa told us beforehand, so I hope they broadcast it soon.  The band opened with a new track, Animals, which sounded terrific.  In fact, they played a lot of new songs, and they were all great-Chris on electric guitar!!  But the old stuff was marvelous..and tho it sounds trite, Yellow was really the highlight.  Chris is such an energetic sort, he seems to put a lot of effort into perorming.  He jumped down off the stage during Yellow, and backwards somersaulted back onstage, only to stand up and get so tangled with his guitar chord and the mic stand that the mic stand fell down.  He kept singing, tho, and by the time the mic stand was righted by a roadie, he was ontrack.  The whole incident reminded me of Wayne's World 2, when the roadies are being trained and one of their tests was to pick up a mic stand that had fallen over.  The band finally played Trouble at the encore, which everyone was clamoring for the whole time.  You could feel the crowd hold their breath every time Chris took the piano, it seemed!

All in all, Coldplay was fabulous.  Chris is funny, and Will sings lovely backup harmonies, who knew?  I can't wait for their next album, it will be fantastic.  I've heard they will be going into the studio later in the summer.
