Roll of Honor - Our Confederate Ancestors

As Sons of Confederate Veterans, it is our duty to see that the true history of the south is presented to future generations.  What better place to begin than with our ancestors and the role they played in the War for Southern Independence. The image below is the "Lion of Atlanta" that memorializes the Unknown Confederate dead at Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta, Georgia.  Its symbolism speaks for itself.  In addition to the known and unknown dead who died for a righteous cause---self-defense, self-government and self-determination---we honor those who survived and who endured the occupation and the hardships to rebuild the South and to raise their children as proud Americans.  Almighty God, grant us the strength and wisdom to defend their good name, guard their history, emulate their virtues and to perpetuate and cherish those principles they loved and for which they sacrificed.  Grant us faith in the Latin motto, Deo Vindice. "God Will Vindicate."

Not for fame or reward
Not for place or for rank
Not lured by ambition
Or goaded by necessity
But in simple
Obedience to duty
As they understood it
These men suffered all
Sacrificed all
Dared all - and died.

Lion of Atlanta, memorializing the Unknown Confederate Dead at Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta, Georgia, who died in defense of their homes and their cause.

Inscription above from the Confederate Monument at Arlington
attributed to Rev. R.H. McKim, Confederate Chaplain

“Carved out of the endurance of granite, God created his masterpiece---the Confederate soldier.” ---Lillian Henderson

Our Ancestors: Americans who risked everything for the right to self-government
