I wrote the lyrics to this song way back in late 1992. This song has the misfortune of often being misunderstood, specifically by those that it makes fun of. These lyrics are written from the point of view of a gay bashing redneck asshole. Though I am making fun of rednecks by "being" one of them, it seems that many of these homophobes still think it's a great song, "because it's so true." Oh well, I guess I really wrote it for those who know better. I even went as far as making the song a country sounding tune. After all "punks" and "fags" are the same breed, aren't they. FREAKS? To make the song more "real" I had to make it sound like a good ol' cowboy tune. I wrote the original music for the song in early 1993. I recorded a demo with Neeno Santucci on drums, while I sang and played bass. I never recorded a guitar track on this recording. Although I thought the idea was pretty good, the music wasn't quite right and I shelved the song. I brought it back out shortly after Jari had joined the band. The guys had been talking about doing something a little different and this seemed like a good opportunity to get this song sounding the way I wanted. Musically, the song pretty much stayed as I had envisioned. In fact the beginning part where I sing, "I'm a redneck asshole/from a northern town/ain't got no room for faggots/we like to run 'em down" is pretty much identical to my original version, but from this point on the rest of the guys gave the song the life it had lacked before. During recording Shannah Liberman sang background vocals with the rest of the band as "The Redneck Chorus." Oh yeah, one thing I forgot to mention. You might note that the third verse is the same as the first verse. When I originally wrote the lyrics, I had a different third verse, but for some reason it was written on a separate sheet of paper and got lost. For convenience I started singing the first verse a second time, with the intention of using the original verse three when it was found. By the time we recorded I hadn't found it so this became the original version. Well, I have since found that elusive verse, and you know what? It sucks real bad, so I'm glad we never used it.
